which is aimed at disrupting the organised crime networks behind the illicit online sale of medicines. This is a key international operation and attracts Ministerial and national press interest with thousands of illegal websites being shut and many millions of pounds worth of illegal medicines being seized.
‘As a role model, Mike freely shares his expertise at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He actively participates in the teaching programmes of both schools of Pharmacy and in the postgraduate programmes of Northern Ireland Centre for Pharmacy Learning and Development. His engaging style and ability to communicate at all levels makes him a popular and highly effective educator. It is fitting, then, that both schools of Pharmacy in Northern Ireland, in recognising his talents, have awarded him the title of Professor … a unique honour in Northern Ireland.
‘His wider contribution to the profession was recognised in 2004 when he was made a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical society of Northern
Ireland, a Fellow of The Royal society of Chemistry in 2013 and, in 2015, he became a Fellow of the Faculty of the Royal Pharmaceutical society, one of few - if any - pharmacists to hold these three recognitions of excellence.
‘Having served in the Royal Observer Corps and as a Lay Custody Visitor for the Police service of Northern Ireland, Mike also served many years as a pharmacist in the Royal Army Medical Corps Reserves. He retired at the rank of Major, and, as the lead pharmacist, had unequalled experience in demonstrating role model characteristics and in mentoring and developing teams of junior officers. In this role he brought great credit to the profession of pharmacy and his contribution was suitably recognised by the award of the Territorial Decoration.
‘With a distinguished career that has had such a positive impact on the professional lives of so many, it is fitting that Professor Mike Mawhinney’s unique contribution is recognised by the Outstanding Contribution to Pharmacy Award.’
‘I have worked with community pharmacists for forty years and have the utmost respect for them, so for me to get an accolade from community pharmacy is, for me, the best accolade I could ever receive.’ Professor Mike Mawhinney
‘EMIS Health is proud and honoured to present Professor Mawhinney with the outstanding contribution to Pharmacy award. His work is exemplary and his commitment to making a difference to Community Pharmacy and the Healthcare sector overall is highly commendable.’ Sima Jassal, Head of Pharmacy, EMIS Health, in partnership with UCA-NI
