ANNE HAND Boots UK, Dungannon
A
nne Hand is a pharmacy advisor in a busy Boots pharmacy located within a shopping centre in Dungannon. The store
caters for a diverse population locally, including a large number of foreign nationals who reside in the town.
Anne has been working in this pharmacy for 24 years and is responsible for ensuring the patients, who visit the pharmacy, get the best possible experience whether it is for dispensed medicines, a pharmacy service or just some advice and expertise.
she currently works very closely with the large Portuguese and Lithuanian community in Dungannon helping them understand how and where to avail of healthcare services locally. On one occasion, for example, she was helping a
Lithuanian couple, who came into the pharmacy with their nine-month-old baby. The gentleman was looking for directions to the DePaul charity in the town.
While she was dealing with the patient, Anne realised that they had nowhere to stay and spoke very little english, and so she rang the homeless charity in Dungannon on their behalf. They told her that they were unable to take young children.
When Anne explained this to the patient, he became very emotional and started crying. Anne brought the family into the consultation room.
The father explained that they had only arrived two weeks before and that they were homeless despite the fact that he had a job. Anne contacted social services, who arranged emergency
accommodation in the town for the family for that night. Anne even drove the family to the accommodation herself as they had no way of getting there. Needless to say, the family were extremely grateful to her.
This Boots UK store is the palliative care pharmacy in Dungannon, and Anne frequently goes over and beyond what is required in her role to ensure these vulnerable patients and their families get the best quality of care at a very difficult time in their life.
she has been known to frequently visit the patients after hours delivering medication and just offering care and support to the patient and their family.
she has volunteered to mentor a trainee pharmacy technician in the pharmacy ensuring
