researched the cost of an electric car, but this proved inhibitive since such a car cost around £30000 and there was no rapid charging point in the village.

The pharmacy therefore decided to invest in an electric bicycle for deliveries and subsequently purchased a Kenby swift bicycle with a 36-volt battery, branded it with the pharmacy logo and fitted a lockable rigid pannier to the rear rack above the battery.

The electric bike was, and still is the answer - thanks to Aubrey’s adoption of the technology. Over the past year, deliveries have continued to increase in both number and volume.

One unforeseen consequence of the adoption of the electric bicycle has been an increase in interest in cycling in the local community, particularly from people, many with reduced mobility, for whom pedal cycling would not be an option.

For many, particularly those had given up any hope of exercising, the health benefits of cycling have become

possible thanks to the introduction of the electric bicycle and seeing Aubrey on his daily journeys. The bicycle has certainly stimulated interest in local patients.

At first glance this may seem a retrograde step by the pharmacy – back to the days of delivery boys cycling short distances in the city.

However, this is very forward thinking as petrol and diesel prices increase, oil becomes scarce and the climate crisis continues unabated. The electric bike is a talking point, increasing customer engagement with the pharmacy in general, with customers young and old smiling as Aubrey pedals by!

It is also an advertisement for the pharmacy and fits in perfectly with the pharmacy’s ‘living well’ and all other healthy living campaigns.

Delivering at busy traffic times, such as school opening and closing times and during rush hour, the pharmacy has found that delivery by bicycle is quicker than becoming trapped in traffic. It also leaves the car free for more distant deliveries.

‘The electric bike service has brought reassurance to all of our patients because I’m out in all weathers. They know that they can totally rely on me and it provides them with a connection to the pharmacy.’ Aubrey Penney

‘McLernons are delighted to continue our long association with the Pharmacy in Focus Awards, celebrating excellence in community pharmacy. Pharmacists are the unsung heroes of primary health care delivery, and recognising and rewarding their success is a good way to raise their public profile. Congratulations to the team at Maghaberry’ Helen Taylor, Operations Manager, McLernons
