‘How do you say 'thank you' when your local pharmacist goes over and above her line of duty?
‘Maria McGuinness has proven that she isn't just a pharmacist, but a counsellor and therapist too.
‘I have suffered on and off from mental health issues over 20+ years and I am only 39. I lost both parents suddenly in the last ten years, and this hasn't helped my health condition.
‘In June 2017, my mother died suddenly and my world fell apart. I started suffering health anxiety, loss of appetite, depression, fatigue, exhaustion, horrific panic attacks, experiencing pains in my head and chest. It was unbearable. I lost two and a half stones in the space of five months. I had to give up work.
‘Following my mother’s passing, I visited various GPs, who told me I was suffering from grief and that it was normal. I decided to consult Maria, as I knew I couldn’t live like this for much longer. she was busy dealing with patients and their needs,
but took time out of her daily schedule and spoke to me for over an hour, reassuring me, it wasn't normal and it was a physical ailment I had, not mental. Her words were ‘your body has closed down. There is nothing wrong with your mind’.
‘Maria reassured me and told me that my problems weren't cardiac, but stress and tension, so she organised physical treatment in our local village of Belleek.
‘every evening for a few weeks after our consultation and before I received my physical treatment, she rang to check how I was and to say an appointment was forthcoming. This just shows how considerate Maria is. Thinking of others outside her working day.
‘When someone passes away in the community, Maria is usually the first there, asking what she can do to help on both a personal and professional level. My late mother used to say ‘Maria McGuinness is better than any doctor’ and she was right!’
