T
he hotel’s Grand Ballroom suite was buzzing with excitement on saturday 1 February, as the cream of the province’s
pharmacy sector gathered to pay tribute to the achievements of its profession.
This year’s awards – the thirteenth annual event – once again attracted the main shakers and movers of Northern Ireland pharmacy. The BBC’s Mark simpson, who played ‘mein host’ on the evening, gave a warm welcome to the new Chief Pharmaceutical Officer, Cathy Harrison, who was joined at the event by, among others, James McCaughan, Chair of Community Pharmacy Northern Ireland, sheelin McKeagney, Chair of Pharmacy Forum, and Paula Bradshaw MLA.
First up on the stage was Peter Rice, Chair of the new UCA-NI Ltd. Peter talked eloquently
about the challenges being faced by today’s community pharmacy.
‘It is no understatement,’ Peter told the guests, ‘to say that it has been an extremely challenging year for community pharmacy. Community pharmacists have fought hard to maintain services and in large part have succeeded, but there are many challenges ahead. Medicines supply issues are escalating and with the uncertainty of this post Brexit climate there is a very real possibility of patient harm.
‘Despite these challenges, I feel a sense of optimism and hope for this year. stormont is restored and I’d like to take the opportunity to welcome Paula Bradshaw from the Health Committee and thank her for her support and attendance tonight.
‘Transformation of the health service is desperately needed and I believe that community pharmacy has the potential to be a key element of primary care for the benefit of the health service and patients.’
This year’s awards covered every aspect of the work that’s prevalent in community pharmacy throughout the province and, as always, a huge number of entries were received across all nine categories: Medicines Counter Assistant, Training & Business Development, excellence in Community Pharmacy Practice, Innovation in Community Pharmacy Practice, Customer service (1-3 pharmacies), Customer service (4+ pharmacies), Working in Partnership, Community Pharmacy of the Year, Pharmacist of the Year and Outstanding Contribution to Pharmacy.
As always, support for the awards was fantastic. This year, in fact, it was particularly phenomenal
