Community Pharmacy of the Year

Steven Craig, National Sales Manager, Sangers AAH and Peter Rice, UCA-NI Chair, present McKeevers Chemist, Fivemiletown with their 'Chemi'

MCKEEVERS CHEMIST Fivemiletown

F

ivemiletown Pharmacy is located in the small rural town of Fivemiletown. The pharmacy has its heart centred on the community’s

health and well-being, with the diversity of the community reflected in the diversity of projects the team have delivered. They have such a passion for health promotion and together they have made a huge impact on the local community.

The pharmacy team all live locally and each has an average of 20 years’ service to the pharmacy, helping the pharmacy grow alongside the community and develop to meet its changing needs. All team members have great insight into the needs of the community, identifying vulnerable patients and going the extra mile to support them. The team practises equality and respect and has a non-judgemental attitude to all. They are approachable and go above and beyond

the call of duty to serve and provide healthcare and improve well-being to all in the community.

The team has a strong desire to reach out to the community and, in 2018, started to engage with health promotion. By listening to the needs of the local community, the team decided to train under the Health Plus Initiative and make steps towards accreditation.

During this time it became apparent that there was a wide range of health requirements in the community. Despite the time constraints and increased financial pressures that all community pharmacies are currently under, the team wanted to ensure it could still go the extra mile in terms of health promotion. The team’s vision was a long- term sustainable approach to health promotion, which meant continually listening to the needs

and adapting in such a way to engage with the community’s changing needs. ‘small steps make a big difference’ became the team’s motto, and, when coupled with consistency and perseverance, the aim was to have sustainable positive changes to health in the community that were accessible to all.

In-store health promotion took a creative new direction and a health and well-being area and community notice zone specifically promoting the wellbeing of the local community were introduced. Health promotion events are advertised on the board and all members of the team continually look out for activities that can be advertised on it. staff also identified local community groups and engaged with them, researching their needs, difficulties and concerns regarding healthcare in their community.
