Tonge achieved their ambitious vision for an affordable celebration of design that has bucked the trend of expensive conferences, delivering a roster of world-class speakers with 90 per cent of the events free to attend without any public funding. The three-day festival, held in

June, sold 10,000 tickets in just its second year and 20,000 visitors from across the globe attended. This is all in addition to his day

job with Substrakt, where he works with some of the world’s biggest arts organisations as a UX designer. He has also led Badego, a

networking group for those working in creative industries in Birmingham, and Glug Birmingham, a creative networking group. The judging panel said: “Daniel

has demonstrated clear and serious commitment to his spare-time activities to benefit the city’s creative sector. He relentlessly

strives to put the region’s creative community on the map and inspires others to celebrate local talent, achieve their own potential and be proud of Birmingham. “An ambitious and hardworking

individual who manages projects which are truly unique to the region and attract over 20,000 visitors from across the globe including America and Australia. It’s time to thank you for your tireless efforts and everything you do for the region and its creative sector.” This year’s awards had an

increase of 25 per cent more entries than last year, and were judged by Louise Teboul, from Common Purpose, poet Casey Bailey, disability specialist Shani Dhanda, Mark Smith from Aston University and 2018 Future Face of Greater Birmingham, Rebecca Halbert.
