Recycling firm
is an inspiration The London Stock Exchange has named Burton-based Willshee’s Waste & Recycling in its ‘Top 1,000 Companies to Inspire Britain’ – for the second year running. The report is aimed at highlighting the
UK’s fastest-growing and most dynamic small and medium sized businesses (SMEs). To get on the list, businesses have to
demonstrate not only positive revenue growth over the last three years, but also outperform their sector peers. Established in 1984, Willshee’s is waste management service, which includes the reduction, reuse, recycling, recovery and disposal of waste for its clients across the Midlands, with the zero waste to landfill now a key part of this. Wilshee’s managing director, Dean
Willshee, said: “It is an honour to be recognised by such a prestigious financial institution as the London Stock Exchange and it is testament to the drive and continuous commitment of our whole team here at Willshee’s. “We have just celebrated 35 years in
business, and have grown from one lorry and 10 skips to 100 employees and over 40 vehicles. Our ambitions have been further boosted by planning permission recently being granted for the expansion of our Swadlincote depot, creating 25 new jobs and giving us the capability to recycle a further 120,000 tonnes a year.” David Schwimmer, CEO, London Stock
Exchange Group, said: “SMEs drive growth, innovation and job creation and are the lifeblood of the British economy. We believe that supporting the growth of these businesses is critical to the UK economy and the creation of a society that works for everyone.”

By Jessica Brookes
Two more local businesses have joined the Burton and District Chamber of Commerce as patrons. Burton Albion Football Club and Hardy Signs
join BritSec and Growth Partners in the Chamber’s top tier of membership. Nicknamed the ‘Brewers’, Burton Albion play at
the Pirelli Stadium in Princess Way, on the outskirts of the town. The team is managed by former Manchester
City and Liverpool star Nigel Clough, son of legendary Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough. Fleur Robinson, Albion’s commercial director,
said: “The football club is an important part of the local economy and we work actively with businesses in the area to use the powerful brand of football and of Burton Albion to the benefit of all of our partners. “Our engagement with the Chamber can only
further our aims to be fully connected and active in the local business economy and to work alongside other members for the promotion of the area as a great place to do business.”
The Hilton at St George’s Park Established by its managing director, Nik
Hardy, in 1993, Hardy Signs is a national and international leading signage firm based in The Maltsters in Wetmore Road, Burton. Nik is in his second term as president of Burton
and District Chamber of Commerce, taking up the role in 2018. The firm has a wide portfolio of physical and
digital signage solutions, including project management, installation, maintenance, content creation and system management work. Nik said: “Establishing Hardy Signs as a patron
of the Burton and District Chamber is the culmination of many years as a member. As a company we have found the division and the wider Greater Birmingham Chambers an invaluable source of business support.” Chris Plant, divisional director of Burton and
District Chamber of Commerce, said: “I am delighted to welcome Burton Albion football club and Hardy Signs to the Chamber as patrons. “They both represent the bright, interesting
and exciting businesses which exist in Burton, demonstrating how the area is rich in organisations that are making an impact locally, nationally and internationally.”
Hotel refurbishment is completed
A £4.2m refurbishment at a four-star hotel located at the home of England’s national football team has been completed. Work began two years ago at the Hilton at St
George’s Park, near Burton, with initial work including the refurbishment of the 500-seater Sir Bobby Robson ballroom, together with the reception area and Education Wing which provides 19 meeting rooms and a 90-seater lecture theatre. This was followed by upgrades and
improvements to the Executive Lounge and hotel bar area, followed by an extensive facelift of the Executive Drum events room, which can seat up to 100 people. Some 86 guest rooms have

undergone a complete refurb and more are planned for next year. General manager Nicola Underhill said: “The
Hilton at St. George’s Park caters for the most diverse range of customers within the Hilton UK group due to our unique position geographically, and it’s our responsibility to ensure every single one of them receives the same level of service and has the very best experience. “Our refurbishment programme is crucial to
fulfilling that promise to our customers.” The Hilton at St. George’s Park is on a 330-
acres site that was once part of the Bass Brewery family estate, and is now home to all 28 English football teams.
