Local businesses show support

By Stephen Brooks, King Solomon International Business School

L-R: Andy Bailey MBE; CEO Enterprise Data Systems (UK) Ltd, Dr Cheron Byfield Founder King Solomon International Business School and Ashley Bayliss Director CEB Ltd

King Solomon International Business School hosted an Enterprise programme in association with local businesses. The benefits of business engaging with the education sector are well documented, especially in relation to developing a pipeline of talent. Ashley Bayliss, CEB Ltd, a

facilitator, said: “I believe that we have the best education system in the world. I went through my school life struggling and left with no qualifications. I passionately believe that if entrepreneurship was part of my curriculum, I would have got an ‘A’ Star. “The message needs to be

clear that the life of a successful entrepreneur is not for the chosen few, but anyone can learn the skills to build a successful business.” Fellow facilitator Andy

Bailey MBE, from Enterprise Data Systems (UK) Ltd, said: “Entrepreneurs engagement with school is extremely important in order to help demonstrate that going into business can be a viable alternative career option. “This engagement should

be used to encourage future business leaders and owners.”

King Solomon believe it is essential to encourage business to look at this activity as a long-term investment strategy. To support our entrepreneurial generation, please contact Stephen Brooks, Head of Corporate Affairs, at sbrooks@kingsolomonibs.com

Master distiller brings gin experience to Simpsons

By John Lamb

Gin has come a long way since it was regarded as Mother’s Ruin. In fact the drink is currently undergoing a renaissance and you can now create your own tipple and label. Gin Britannia is the brainchild of Chris Abbot. After

working for many years in the drinks and music industry, he has linked up with Simpsons restaurant in Edgbaston to offer an opportunity for guests to design their personalised gin followed by a three-course lunch. Chris, a master distiller who was raised in the Black

Country, has worked in public relations in the music industry. The son of a wine merchant, Chris said: “Gin Britannia was originally created and held at Simpsons in their Eureka Kitchen. “This is a learning experience with a difference in

which guests blend their own bottle of gin to a recipe of their choosing.” After learning about the processes, guests start with

a mix of water and ethanol and after adding juniper berries, the defining taste of gin, the “botanicals” are included to create a distinctive flavour. The ingredients include citrus or spice flavours. Chris uses hand-crafted Portuguese stills made from

copper to give a smooth flavour to the finished product. He is also working with businesses to create their

own corporate gin along with bespoke labels. Adds Chris: “I take guests through the history,

customs and culture of gin from its origins to the current renaissance.”

Andreas Antona, chef-patron and owner at Simpsons, said: “For the business world there is no better way to unwind than by distilling your own gin. Companies can create their own label and use for corporate gifts. During his career as an A&R man in the music

industry, Chris worked with Oasis, Robbie Williams when he launched his solo career, Primal Scream and UB40. As a result he earned platinum and gold discs for the huge successes of several recordings. Chris is also an author and his first book was a science fiction work, ‘Zavier of the World’.
