The Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) is holding an event for businesses and organisations that want to break into the healthcare market through innovation and technical advancements. The event – ‘Breaking into Med-Tech’ – takes

place at the University of Birmingham’s Healthcare Technologies Institute on 7 October. The event will include a series of

presentations from academics within the University of Birmingham and Enterprise Europe Network. There will also be a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style event

featuring a number of firms pitching for the opportunity to win £3,000 of support in order to help them break into the healthcare market.

An innovation and funding event and exhibition is being held on 11 October during the inaugural Birmingham Tech Week. The event is aimed at entrepreneurs,

investors, academics and others and it is hoped it will be a boost to the next generation of innovators, and also help encourage inward investment. The event will feature a series of speakers,

including Prof Liam Grover, from University of Birmingham Healthcare Technologies Institute/ Birmingham Life Sciences Park, and Drew Currie, from Innovation Factory Co-operative. Those attending who are seeking funding

and support will get the opportunity to pitch their ideas to a panel of experts. The innovation and funding event takes

place on 11 October, at the NatWest entrepreneurship accelerator, 7 Brindley Place.

Midlands Engine is organising a market visit to Kenya and Uganda – and are calling on businesses in the infrastructure sector to register their interest. In partnership with the Department for

International Trade teams based in Kenya and Uganda, the programme for the November visit will include a number of discussions with key stakeholders to give companies a valuable overview of the opportunities that exist in these two markets. Highlights of the visit will include meetings

with Kenya National Highways Authority, Kenya Railways Corporation, Uganda National Oil Company, the Petroleum Authority of Uganda and Uganda National Roads Authority.

Businesses in the healthcare sector can now register their interest to take part in a visit to Arab Health 2020. Midlands Engine is taking a trade delegation

to Arab Health 2020. The 2019 event hosted more than 4,250 exhibitors and welcomed more than 106,000 visitors from 150 countries – an increase of 20 per cent from 2018 – highlighting its strength as the Middle East and North Africa’s leading exhibition in the healthcare industry.

44 CHAMBERLINK October 2019

A Birmingham-based cyber security specialist has won major new contracts in South Africa and Latin America, with help from Chamber- based international trade advisers. The firm is Forensic Pathways, which is based

in the city centre. The business develops software products for those operating in law enforcement and the security services, as well as firms from the legal and financial sectors. The company also provides due diligence,

fraud investigation, cyber security services, and ‘dark web’ monitoring and investigation services to corporate and private sector clients.

‘The Chamber truly is a ‘one-stop-shop’ for business support’

Forensic Pathways has been working with DIT

since 2003 to help capitalise on international demand for British-made forensic software, products and services. The business has already established a strong presence in overseas markets including France, America, Canada, Zambia and South Africa. Exporting currently accounts for 60 per cent

of the firm’s annual turnover and this is expected to grow by 15 per cent in the next two years, thanks to the new contracts in Latin America and South Africa. The business is also hoping to develop a greater presence in the US market. Forensic Pathways chief executive officer Deb

Leary said: “Forensics is a small but global market, meaning that exporting is fundamental to what we do. When branching out to new regions such as Latin America, we have been able get in touch with DIT representatives in the area who have helped us establish a clear exporting strategy and in some instances introduced us to buyers. If we can do it with support from DIT, so can other businesses in the Midlands.”

Mandy Haque: ITAs understand the challenges faced by exporters

Mandy Haque, international director at the Chamber, said: “The Chamber truly is a ‘one- stop-shop’ for business support and this is certainly demonstrated with the role of the international trade adviser (ITA). “The ITAs based at the Chamber are there to

deliver the Department for International Trade (DIT) services to businesses to support them in overseas market growth. What is important for the ITAs is that they understand from the company’s perspective any challenges that they face, for example the barriers preventing market entry, to then move them forward in a sustainable way.”

Training courses to be relaunched

The Chamber’s international department will be relaunching its portfolio of training courses at this month’s Autumn Expo, which is being held at Villa Park on 25 October. Mandy Haque, international director at the Chamber, said that the focus of the new package would be on delivering courses that were relevant and packed with high quality content. She said: “I am delighted to present this new

opportunity at the Autumn Expo to support businesses who see the value in upskilling the workforce. Over the last few months we have had an increase in enquiries, especially around preparing to import and export after the proposed exit from the EU. “This sparked me and the team into action to

make sure that we offer really useful course content that satisfies the needs of businesses.”
