In Brief
Tamworth has won gold for the 10th year running in the annual ‘Heart of England in Bloom’ competition. The Staffordshire town won the ‘Small City’
category, and its entry was based on the theme of ‘Tamworth in Bloom – more than just flowers’. Floral displays which were part of this in
initiative included centrepieces in the castle grounds and the Moor Street traffic island, as well as baskets, planters and wild flower bee friendly zones around the town. There was also the ‘Big Sow’ initiative the
castle grounds, various community planting projects and many contributions from local businesses, including Ankerside shopping centre and Tamworth Brewing Co, which again brewed its special ‘Blooming Ale’. Tamworth councillor John Chesworth said:
“We always put 100 per cent effort in, but this year was on a whole other level. “We’ve had people planting flowers for the
Big Sow, we’ve had new sculptures erected in Dosthill Park and we’ve even had people knitting cosies for trees and forget-me-knot flowers in a project to raise awareness of dementia – all under the Bloom banner. “The campaign wouldn’t be complete
without some stunning displays in the Castle Grounds and on the Moor Street traffic island, which I have to say is one of the best I’ve seen. “Add that to the tributes to our heritage,
Queen Victoria and the Assembly Rooms, which have also been beautiful and reflective of Tamworth’s rich history and it’s clear the award is well deserved.”
Small business commissioner, Paul Uppal, will be speaking at Lichfield and Tamworth Chamber of Commerce's annual general meeting and celebration lunch. He will be speaking at the event on 8
October at Drayton Manor Park. Paul, from Smethwick in Birmingham, has
had lengthy careers in politics and business. He spent 20 years in the construction and real
estate sector, running his own small business, before being elected Member of Parliament for Wolverhampton South West in 2010. Since then, he has worked in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, been part of the Number 10 Policy Board and was elected chairman of the All Party Urban Development Group. Alongside Paul, James Blackman, president
of Lichfield and Tamworth Chamber of Commerce, and Chris Brewerton, senior business development manager for Lichfield and Tamworth Chamber of Commerce, will also be speaking at the event, providing delegates with an overview of the year for the Chamber. Four new Chamber divisional council
members will also be announced at the event. The council meets monthly to discuss a
range of issues related to local and regional business and Chamber activities.

Tamworth’s champions will promote its heritage
Two new champions have been appointed to focus specifically on developing Tamworth and promote the town centre and its heritage. Cllr Ben Price has been appointed ‘town
centre champion’ while newly-elected cllr Paul Brindley will take on the role of ‘heritage champion’. They will be speaking to businesses, groups
and individuals across the town to understand the challenges and explore opportunities for working together to develop, improve and promote the town centre and its rich heritage. Cllr Jeremy Oates, who has served as a
Tamworth councillor for almost 20 years and who oversees town centre regeneration, tourism, heritage and economic and business development, said: “We have been consulting widely with the community as part of our ‘Tamworth…What’s Next?’ campaign which seeks to ensure we take as many views on board as possible when creating this new vision and hundreds have given their feedback and ideas. “However, there’s no denying it’s a big job and
it’s important we get it right, so the two champions have been appointed to ensure that we leave no stone unturned in understanding the challenges and creating the best possible vision. “The new town centre champion will look at
some of the specific issues in more depth and will be engaging with as many groups and businesses as possible to ensure we are all working together and towards the same goals. “Tamworth also has a very rich heritage and
this is one of the town’s main selling points when it comes to attracting tourists.
We are the champions: Ben Price, Jeremy Oates and Paul Brindley
“Heritage was also something that came up
repeatedly as part of the ‘Tamworth…What’s Next?’ debate and therefore this will also be given special focus by a dedicated champion.”
* Tamworth is one of 50 towns which have been invited to apply for help from the taxpayer to develop and reinvent their high-streets. The 50 towns have been invited to pitch for a
slice of the government’s new £1bn Future High Streets Fund (FHSF). A sum of up to £150,000 is available to help each town develop their application. Those towns which are successful in obtaining funding will be announced next Spring.

The theatre's new performances programme,
being named The Cinema, is being launched this month, and is being backed by the Chamber. Matthew Clay, sales and development manager at Lichfield Garrick, said: “Lichfield Garrick is thrilled to continue our relationship with Lichfield & Tamworth Chamber of Commerce, and we are very excited they are joining us on our new venture of showing films
Live entertainment: The Garrick
