Highlighting the region’s strengths

A new report from Make UK, the manufacturers’ organisation and accountancy and business advisory firm BDO LLP, shows that manufacturing continues to be central to the success of the West Midlands economy. It continues to be the third biggest

manufacturing region in the country worth £21.7bn in the last year. The report, analysing the overall

status of industry in the region over the past year, highlights that industry also accounts for 16.5 per cent of the West Midlands economy overall which is substantially higher than the national average of 10 per cent. Most of the economic indicators have been volatile across the

region in the past year which is consistent with a more difficult trading environment generally, Brexit uncertainty, a European slowdown and the structural changes affecting the automotive sector in particular to which the West Midlands has a high exposure. The transport sector of which automotive is a part accounts for 36

per cent of industrial output in the West Midlands which is by far the highest proportion of one sector in any UK. The West Midlands also continues to be a strong export performer,

accounting for almost 10 per cent of total UK manufacturing exports. However, in contrast to most UK regions the West Midlands has a relatively low level of exposure to the EU (44.9 per cent of exports) but one of the heist exposures to the North American and Asian markets. Charlotte Horobin (pictured), region director for Make UK in the Midlands, said: “The report shows that industry continues to have a central role to play in the success of the West Midlands economy. The last year has seen a strong though volatile performance, despite the uncertain political environment and global markets. “There are well-documented challenges going forward, not least

Brexit uncertainty, structural change facing the automotive sector and the global economic downturn. “Despite this, those companies who invest and innovate will still

have the best long term prospects and can contribute to raising the productivity performance of the region and the UK as a whole.”

New homes for Ladywood

Avison Young has been appointed by Birmingham City Council as lead property adviser for the planned regeneration of the city’s Ladywood area. Covering more than 150 acres

(62 hectares), Ladywood connects the western edge of the city centre to the leafy suburb of Edgbaston and is currently home to around 1,000 residential units, representing a mix of apartments, maisonettes and houses. Through the proposed

regeneration, Birmingham City Council will realise its ambition of creating a family-focused neighbourhood connected by a network of streets and public spaces. A new master plan for the site will seek to enable the delivery of an additional 5,000 housing units, supported by local amenities

and facilities which will provide a further boost to the local economy. As part of the appointment,

Avison Young will provide property consultancy services to the council, advising on development viability, master planning, land assembly matters, redevelopment and intensification. Carl Potter (pictured),

Avison Young, said: “The redevelopment of the Ladywood area of the city is another great step forward for Birmingham. Ladywood has for some

time been seen as a location

packed with potential. With Birmingham’s population estimated to grow by 10 per cent over the next 15 years, the redevelopment of Ladywood represents a significant contribution towards the city’s need for new homes.”
