Greater Birmingham’s leading companies

Let’s shake on it: David Baldwin with Paul Faulkner

Growing firm

joins Chamber A leading accountancy firm is looking to boost its presence across the region after becoming a member of four of the Chamber’s geographical divisions. Baldwins is one of the UK’s

fastest-growing accountancy firms. The company has 97 offices across the UK. Twelve of those are in the West Midlands, including Walsall, Wolverhampton, Cannock, Tamworth and Cherry Street in Birmingham city centre. To reflect its growing

presence across the region, Baldwins has become an 1813 Club member of the Birmingham, Lichfield & Tamworth, Burton & District and Chase Chambers. David Baldwin, director at

Baldwins, said: “We’re pleased to become members of the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce. “As our business continues

to grow we look forward to working with the Chamber to expand our presence in the local community.” Paul Faulkner, chief

executive of the GBCC, said: “We’re delighted that Baldwins have not only become Chamber members but demonstrated a commitment and a willingness to embrace such a large part of our geographical area. “It’s great to have them on

board and we look forward to their participation in Chamber activities.”

Business is booming in Birmingham for accountant PwC, as its staff numbers soar past 2,000. In fact, the firm says that its

headcount is nearing 2,500, as it prepares to move to new offices at One Chamberlain Square next year. The firm’s Birmingham staff

numbers have increased by a massive 60 per cent in the past three years, and this is partly down to PwC UK experiencing higher than expected growth over its financial year. Revenue for the year ended 30

June 2019 was up by 12 per cent to £4,233m, as clients turned to the firm for help in tackling uncertainty, risk and the need to transform in the wake of the country’s decision to abandon the European Community. However, numbers have also

risen due to the decision by PwC to invest in regional growth – today, the firm now employs more than 10,000 staff outside London and is planning to invest £140m in the year ahead in people, quality, training, technology and upskilling. This autumn also saw a 35 per cent in new recruits starting their

Staff numbers soar at PwC as office move looms

“As we continue to build the workforce of the future we are in a strong position going into our 2020 financial year. “With our latest intake of new

joiners we have surpassed a key milestone as our Midlands-wide team increased to in excess of 2,500 people. “I am delighted that the 2019

cohort of graduate recruits have helped us to reach a landmark of 2,000 colleagues based here in Birmingham as we grow towards our planned target of 2,300 by the end of next year. “There was a high demand for

our core services across our Midlands offices, and, in particular, for technology-related solutions. “Against a challenging political

and economic backdrop, our performance reflects our commitment to working with our clients to solve complex problems while making continual investment in our people and our business. “It is particularly pleasing to see

revenue growth in areas where we see potential for expansion, such as in private business and international markets.”

A dedicated ‘space for calm’

It’s a stressed out world that we live in – but Solihull’s Resorts World has reopened a place where everyone can go and just chill out. It’s the ‘Zen Zone’, which is being run by a yoga guru

who goes by the name of ‘The Gentle Rebel’. As well as being a ‘space for calm’, the Zen Zone will

also be host to weekly yoga classes and weekly morning meditation classes, designed to decrease stress, anxiety and increase productivity throughout the working day. It will also be available for private hire by local groups or businesses looking for a space for wellbeing activities. The Zen Zone was originally designed as a pop-up

during Mental Health Awareness Week back in May, when it was overwhelmingly well received. According to Resorts World, ‘not only was it seen as

a great space to go and relax, honest written feedback found it had made a difference and had a genuinely positive impact on those with conditions such as anxiety and autism’.

Ian Bennett, Resorts World operations director for

Resorts World, said: “Resorts World’s key mission is for our spaces and experiences to create awesome lasting impressions. “The Zen Zone secures a space for everyone at

Resorts World to enjoy a space for calm during their leisure time or their everyday working environment.”
