Johnny gave this country five com-
bat deployments, found a total of twelve IEDs, two weapons caches and saved countless lives. Yet, now that it was time to retire, his old “aggressive” reputation was coming back to haunt him. Everything ever written about this dog included the word “Aggressive” in large letters to forewarn veterinarians and technicians that he didn’t suffer fools gladly. The military policies allow for adop-
tion, but when the dog is overly aggres- sive, like Johnny, with a strong possibility of causing a serious bite, sometimes the dog is not allowed to be adopted. Johnny was pretty much on the cusp
of not being adoptable. As hard as he fought for his Marines, his Marines fought for him. In the end, it was agreed that his second handler, Cpl. Albert Johnson, would adopt him based on a huge list of caveats to which he also had to agree: among them, no children and an eight foot fence. Johnny was whelped in April of
2001 and passed away in June of 2015 at the ripe old age of 14; a lifetime of courage and commitment, fidelity and fierceness, love and loyalty. His memorial on July 18, 2015 in
Newtown, Tenn. was attended by all three of his devoted handlers, many friends and family in honor of this once- in-a-lifetime military dog, Johnny F728. All three handlers agreed that what
they would like to say about Johnny is from his adopted tongue, Kelev tov. In Hebrew, it means Good dog.

Dixie Whitman is President Emeritus of Military Working Dog Team Support Association, an all-volunteer organization The New Barker has worked with since 2009. The mission of the 501c3 organiza- tion is to support Military Working Dog Teams, including but not limited to, sending quarterly care packages to MWD teams deployed around the globe.
