Dade City Dogs’ Day

The 10th annual Dogs’ Day in Dade City took place in on a gorgeous morning in March. The New Barker has been a part of this event every year, which has grown in popularity among businesses and rescue groups participating. The event’s schedule clips along making for a fun morning - from the opening Wagon Parade around Agnes Lamb Park to the costume and talent con- tests to the demonstrations, live entertainment and the finale - an ice-cream and yogurt eating contest. Proceeds benefit the My Dog’s Diggin’ dog park in Dade City. For information on the event’s 2020 date and participa- tion, contact Lucy Avila at 352.424.4972 or email her at LucyAvila707@gmail.com

Theodora of Florida Cocker Spaniel Rescue. She was picked up as a stray by Hillsborough County Animal Services. The heartworm positive senior dog also had mastitis when the rescue group picked her up from the shelter. Thanks to rescue partnerships, this sweet dog was saved from being eutha- nized. Atlas was just happy to be hanging out with his humans and taking in all of the sites (and smells).

Cassie Kennedy and her dog Kiki of The Ohana Dog Show performed for the crowd. She said that Kiki was a fearful dog when first adopted. “I started working with her and through training, she became more confident. She loves performing for the crowd and responds to applause,” said Cassie. The Ohana Dog Show, by the way, is part of The New Barker+Clearwater Threshers Dog Days of Summer. They will be performing just before the national anthem at each Monday evening home game through August. Photography by Anna Cooke.

Suzanne and Bruce, owners of Dog Mania & Cats in Dade City are big supporters of the event as well as The New Barker dog magazine.

Bromley the Yorkie was fashionably hip in his overalls and dark sunglasses.

Scuppers is a Spanish Water Dog, the same type of dog in Margaret Wise Brown’s children’s book, The Sailor Dog. In the book, Scuppers wants to be a sailer and finally gets the chance to go out to sea. Brown also wrote Goodnight Moon. This Scuppers, by the way, is quite the dog, learning tricks from the book 101 Dog Tricks by Kyra Sundance and her dog Chalcy.

Angel is a merle apricot color Chihuahua.

We love seeing this happy crew every year at Dogs’ Day in Dade City. Meet Jake, Jimmy, Joey, Jack, Sarah and somewhere in the buggy is Emily.
