Lakeland Strawberry Cluster

A Boy and His Dog.
We met 11-year-old Nick during the Strawberry Cluster Dog Show in March at Sun ‘n Fun in Lakeland. He is a junior handler who has been showing Scottish Terriers for two years. Bobby is his three-year- old Scottie he was showing during the Strawberry Cluster.
Nick’s family, who live in Archer just outside of Gainesville, has had six Scottish Terriers. The first Scottie he trained with was Cera, both of them mentored by Jene Anderson and Sheila-Faith Barry. When Cera wasn’t doing well with the lead they were using, Nick invented one just for her. “She didn’t like the tension in the lead,” Nick told us. As soon as he started using the new lead he made, they both did very well in the ring, winning Owner Handled Best of Breed in 2016. Scottish Terriers are a
difficult breed for junior handlers to groom, train and show. Nick showed such dedication to his dog. He was a delight to watch
in the ring and speak with afterwards. “I did well, today. But, we
didn’t place,” Nick said, matter- of-factly. If he was disappointed, the poised and polite young man revealed no trace of it on his face or in his mannerisms. After competing, Nick’s
dad, Jason, suggested he walk over and give Jene a hug. Halfway to his destination, though, the young man suddenly appeared uncertain, and turned back around towards his dad. Jason met him halfway and said, “C’mon, Nick that’s part of being with the Terriers. Go hug her, and then we’ve got to get going.”
Bradenton Paws In Motion
Rick Yocum, executive director of the Humane Society of Manatee County addressed the crowd during the 13th annual Paws In Motion. More than 200 walkers and 40 vendors participated at Caddy’s of Bradenton, rais- ing $21,413.00. Rick credited the whole community for working together, particularly animal rescues and Manatee County Animal Services. “Sometimes, animal welfare groups don’t see eye to eye. Well, I’m here to tell you, in Manatee County, we see 20/20,” said Rick.
