In Case of an Emergency, Will You Throw Us A Lifeline?

Last October, Central Florida watched as Hurricane Michael ravaged the Florida Panhandle and Southern Georgia. The storm caused over $15 billion in damage, leaving homes flattened and causing power outages across the Southeast United States. Soon after the storm passed, animal shelters in the affected areas began sending out pleas for help. They had been caught off guard and had nowhere to house their animals while the damages from the storm were repaired. Kennels were under water, facilities were short-staffed, hundreds of animals were being evacuated and needed a place to go. Luckily, nearby shelters stepped up and took in animals from the affected agencies.

As we headed to press with this issue, Travis was still available for adoption at Pet Pal Animal Shelter. Call 727.328.7738.

While Pet Pal Animal Shelter of St. Petersburg sent

volunteers to Georgia to retrieve shelter dogs that were dis- placed by the storm, their staff began thinking of ways to avoid a similar situation, and they came up with an elegant solution. It is a simple idea, but we believe it can make a huge difference to the animals in their care. Pet Pal is asking members of the community to add their information to a disaster volunteer data base. In the case of an event that requires the shelter to be evacuated, Pet Pal will ask these volunteers to temporarily house a dog or cat, provided their own home is not evacuated. Arrangements will be made to pick up the animal(s) at

the shelter, along with food, litter and any other supplies the temporary foster will need. After the emergency passes and any necessary repairs are made to the shelter, volunteers will be contacted to return their fosters to Pet Pal. The shelter recently reached out to their supporters,

volunteers and adopters by email and the response has been great. The data base is growing and Pet Pal would like to extend the invitation to the entire community. If you have an interest in fostering an animal in

case of a disaster, please email your information to info@petpalanimalshelter.com. It is just that easy.
