“The radiographs showed that there
were no other disease processes (bone cancer or infection in the spine, frac- tures, dislocations, or instabilities) which might interfere with the safe perform- ance of physical therapy and acupunc- ture for the suspected disc disease,” Dr. Cook added. Treatment through electroacupunc-
ture can be very helpful for cases that present like Sadie’s. It reduces pain, restores better blood perfusion, decreases inflammation, provides protection to the injured nervous tissue from inflammatory substances produced by the injury, and promotes growth and protection of the part of the neuron (nerve cell) which attaches to the muscles and organs called the axon. All of these things can help restore function and speed healing. Based on that information, Dr. Cook and Dr. Todd agreed that an integrative approach, including pharmaceuticals such as prednisone, Chinese Herbal Medicine, and electroacupuncture would help give Sadie the best chance for a return to function, especially since Mom felt surgery was not a good option. Severe disc disease in the neck or
cervical region can be debilitating and result in an inability for patients to move, stand and accomplish minimum life quality tasks such as eating, drinking, and getting outside to eliminate. Disc disease can vary from pain with no neurologic impairment to quadriplegia (four limbs paralyzed). Sadie could not stand, but she could lift her head and move her legs. “Based on this, Sadie’s prognosis was guarded,” said Dr. Todd. “I am happy to say that she has done very well and can stand and walk now. She still has issues, but an integrative approach has worked for her, for now.” Dr. Philipp Schott, the aforemen-
tioned author, writes, “Veterinary medicine is not an animal business that happens to involve people, but a people business that happens to involve animals.” “Our goal, as a family veterinarian,
is to make it so that parents have as little to worry about as possible,” Dr. Todd told us. “We have to take care of mom and dad as well as the pet family.”
