At the shelter, Bruce expressed his concerns with society, as a whole; the increase in animal and domestic violence abuse, which often correlates with lower levels of education, specifically reading comprehension. “Our prisons are full, with three quarters of the prison popu- lation reading at below third grade level,” said Bruce. “A program like the Magic Bark Bus can help break that cycle by getting the kids interested in compassion for animals early on. If they’re made aware of things like – it’s not okay to leave a dog tethered and unattended – teaches them to recognize the signs of animal abuse, they’ll have positive, possibly life-changing conversa- tions with family members, friends and acquaintances. The shelter’s long term goal for the
Magic Bark Bus program is to take it statewide. “Then, who knows? Nationally?” asked Bruce. “For now, we hope other Florida shelters will contact us for assistance; ask us questions and use our template to implement their own program. The Magic Bark Bus is the most well-known and recognizable vehicle in Marion County – for a good reason.”
