Pets Are Rockin The ‘Burg. by Karen Bartoszek

It’s a great time to be a dog, cat or other much- loved pet in St. Pete! In 2018 Mayor Kriseman pro- claimed St. Petersburg a Pet Friendly City. That started the tennis ball rolling for St. Pete PAWS, a collective of shelters, businesses, civic leaders and pet parents dedicated to making the city a place where Pets Are Welcome in our homes, businesses and green spaces and where the unconditional love of pets is a part of St. Pete’s charm. Partnering with Mars PetCare’s Better Cities

for Pets program, St. Pete PAWS is working on creating welcoming environments for pets in housing, parks, and businesses which helps get more pets out of shelters into loving homes. Key to the program’s success is responsible pet owner- ship. The team is also building a creative educa- tion plan about what pet friendly means and how everyone plays a vital role in caring for furry loved ones—from pet parents to business and communi- ty leaders. St. Pete PAWS goals are to: •Enhance and expand St. Petersburg’s paw-

print with projects and education that promote happy, welcome and healthy pets and pet families in our city's businesses, homes and parks. •Build a framework of pet friendly and pet

centric businesses creating connections and part- nering together to maximize their collective skills and passion to make a positive impact on pets and the community. •Shine a light on the pet friendly jewel that

St. Pete is and promote the tangible benefits pet friendliness provides to our current residents, newcomers and visitors—both two and four legged.

The team has several pawsitively amazing

projects in the works, with more to come. On Love Your Pet Day in February Mayor Kriseman took to Facebook Live to announce the Pet Friendly Business Map and St. Pete PAWS page on the City’s website. The Business team is work- ing with the Mayor’s office on the “Mayor’s Pet Friendly Business Certification” with criteria that will take Pet Friendly to the next level. The Housing team is reaching out to communities to promote more pet friendly housing options and, where possible, go size and breed restriction free. The Parks team is creating plans for more hydration and waste stations in city parks and common areas, along with a proactive and fun education program on the importance of responsible pet parenting.
