Helping People Help Animals. –by Debra Starr “To be an angel, one need not have wings. In giving love there is an equal grace.” ~Francois Couperin

Angels come in many forms. In animal rescue and care, angels are supporters who make funds available to treat the pets who would otherwise suffer or perish. Generous “angels” enable us to show compassion and save or improve the lives of dogs and cats throughout Manatee County. Animal Network’s Angel Fund has been “helping people

help animals,” since 2008. Over the past 10+ years, the fund has enabled us to be angels to many pets including the ones in this article. The female black

Lady

Labrador meekly wagged her tail as the vet tech examined her neck. She winced slightly, turn- ing her head to reveal a collar firmly embedded in her neck. It wasn’t the first time the medical staff has seen this. Embedded collars occur if a dog is neg-

lected long enough to outgrow their collar size, resulting in skin damage and usually severe infection. Fortunately, this stray dog had an angel on her side and once she was cured, Lady was placed in a loving home. Animal Network’s Angel Fund was established for dogs

like Lady whose medical care would otherwise not be possi- ble. Sometimes, dogs and cats that have owners who are in desperate need of financial assistance too. The fund helps them too, so their pet can stay healthy, happy and HOME. AN ANGEL IN THE HOUSE Manny and Scruffy recently benefited from the Angel

Fund. When their owner Bill found out that he needed open heart surgery, his first thoughts were of his dogs. He needed to board the dogs during and after his surgery, but money was tight. The Angel Fund provid- ed assistance and three weeks later when Bill was given a clean bill of health, the family was reunited. CATS NEED ANGELS TOO If ever a cat needed an

angel, it was Budda. Sadly, he was left behind when his own- ers moved and was discovered at an outdoor community cat feeding station. As a former

pet, Budda was scared and the outside lifestyle he was forced to adopt took a physiological and physical toll on him. Thanks to the Angel Fund, Budda was transported for surgery with injuries from a dog attack. Loving fosters nursed him back to health and taught him to trust and love again. Budda was adopted through All Kitty Korner Rescue. THIS PUPPY NEEDS AN ANGEL Every month, Animal Network contributes to an Angel

Fund for the Humane Society of Manatee County. Terri Romano, their Veterinary Practice Manager and Dr. Lindsay Rollend, their Wellness Director, are passionate about all their patients, but reserve special places in their hearts for their Angel Fund babies, like Taco, a 10-month-old Dachshund. suffering from severe weight loss and his owners can’t afford the cost of diagnostics

or treatment. The Angel Fund is assisting them to discover what is causing Taco to waste away. He has begun a pancreatic enzyme replacement regimen in hopes that his body will begin to absorb nutrients. AN ANGELIC TRANSFORMATION When Hercules came to the Humane Society he was

severely malnourished and instead of fur, his thin body was covered in sores and scars. Thanks to the Angel Fund and months of baths, medication and good food, Hercules has gained 30 pounds and has grown a lovely new coat. He has a wonderful home where he is treasured. These stories are only a handful of inspiring and reward-

ing tales of how Animal Network’s Angel Fund transforms the lives of community pets in need. The Angel Fund helps pets with acute conditions (severe and sudden in onset) as well as chronic conditions (long-developing). The Angel Fund provides the precious gift of time to caregivers. Time to determine proper treatment, time to heal or simply time to be in a safe place during tough times.
