of Missouri and Shiba Inu Rescue to research and develop case studies on Tay-Sachs disease. The disease is a rare inher- ited condition that results in the destruction of nerve cells and is fatal in children. The most common type, known as infantile Tay-Sachs disease, becomes apparent around three to six months of age with the baby losing the ability to turn over, sit or crawl. Shiba-Inus, it appears, are the animal model for the human disease. “Right now, we’re working on the second case in less than a year. Ultimately, we’ll want to get the studies published in human medical journals,” said Dr. Cook. “We don’t know if there will ever be a gene mod- ification for the disease, but this is a good start.” Maggie, who just turned 12, continues to go everywhere
with David and Bobbie, including many dog-friendly restau- rants throughout the Tampa Bay area. “We live in a wonderful area of Westchase, and Maggie has her routine when we go on walks, which is about five times every day,” said David. “She sniffs her way down the sidewalk and then we cross the street to go into the park, where she sniffs some more.” Bobbie adds, “When I get dressed up - fix my hair and
put on perfume, Maggie goes crazy since she knows she’s going somewhere special with us.” To which David concurs: anywhere with his two girls is special enough for him.
U
Veterinary Neurology After completion of a residency, an extensive examination process must be passed in order to demonstrate the knowledge necessary to become a board-certified veteri- nary neurologist. The most important skill a board-certified veterinary neurologist possesses is the ability to perform a detailed neurological exam. Since animals are not able to voice their concerns, the neurological exam is key to determining if, and what part of the nervous system is affected. Unlike human neurologists, most Board-Certified Veterinary Neurologists are trained to not only diagnose diseases of the nervous system, but also have extensive training performing surgeries to address the diseases they diagnose. Therefore, brain and spinal surgeries are com- monly referred to Board-Certified Veterinary Neurologists by General Practitioners. This comprehensive approach to managing diseases of the nervous system is a major strength of SCAN.
