The cats live in a large room, like
a dorm. There’s a secure outdoor patio accessible to them 24/7. At any given time, the shelter is home to 250 cats. When pressed for an answer, at the
top of Sue’s wish list is a new roof. “Our building is solid, but pretty old. We continue to extend the life of the roof with repairs here and there. But, sooner or later, we’re going to need a new one.” Estimated costs for a new roof on the 4,500 square foot building are around $100,000. Fundraising efforts continue, while taking care of the animals in their charge. Abandoned Pet Rescue is often
invited to area community events, like the monthly Jazz Brunch at Las Olas Boulevard. Volunteers walk around with adoptable dogs wearing Adopt Me vests. “We meet new people, all the time, who tell us they’ve never heard about Abandoned Pet Rescue — people who tell us they live just blocks from the shelter,” said Sue. “I say to them, you mean you can’t hear the dogs barking? I tell myself and anyone who will listen, we’re Fort Lauderdale’s Best Kept Secret.”
