Another Lucky Dog. Words and pictures by Gloria Yarina
Mac’s story starts in front of a Walmart in Pensacola. He was for sale for $10.00. He was extremely thin and had quite a few fleas floating around him. Intact, Mac had never been seen by a veterinarian. He appeared to be about four years-old. Fate, in the form of a shelter volunteer,
happened by and purchased him. She took him home, bathed then fed him, and thus began the job of rescue. The veterinarian did some basic tests. This little boy weighed in at 12 pounds, less than half what he should have weighed for his age and size. He was also heartworm positive. Before treatment could begin, a rescue group would need to commit to Mac. First, Little Brown Dog Rescue, a rescue organization that takes in Boykin Spaniels was contacted. They forwarded the call for help to Save Our Cocker Spaniel Rescue (SOCKS). Between the two rescue organizations, a long-term foster was found to ensure Mac’s treatment and care would be followed through. SOCKS arranged a transport and in a
few days Mac was on his way to his new foster home. Everyone who met Mac was taken by his sweet and lovable demeanor. People were drawn to him. Magical Mac. Current situation: Mac has gained 12

pounds, is up-to-date on his shots, and has been neutered. His heartworm treatment is going well. The big trick will be to keep this little guy calm for the weeks ahead. Good luck with that. So much of the world is new to Mac, as he learns socializa- tion skills with Miles, a Brittany Spaniel. He is housebroken, has the cutest sit, is anxious to please, gets along with other dogs, and is a great companion. But wait folks — hold onto your hearts.

There is also the possibility that Mac may become a foster volunteer’s failure. Yes, we think he may have found his permanent home. This is what rescue is about. There is a rescue group for almost every
breed. Just Google the breed name and see for yourself. So many good dogs, like Mac, are waiting to be adopted. Don’t be shy. Rescue groups are there to help make a Mac-type match.
