Matt and Samantha worked with their dogs individually

and sometimes two at a time during the nine months, creating different situations for the dogs. It’s important that your dog has the basics in obedience

training down. Sit. Stay. Down. Come. Once comfortable with that, start working with the dogs in different scenarios, such as coming through the door with the car seat. Remember, coming through your home’s door with baby in tow is going to be new for everyone. During training, prior to the baby arriving, Samantha and Matt worked with their dogs, placing them in their sit/obedient positions before letting them sniff the car seat. Then they allowed the dogs to explore the car seat and the stroller, using positive reinforcement. They also set Pandora up for a baby crying to get the dogs comfortable with the sound, again using positive reinforcement. When the big day finally came, all went according to plan

with the dogs meeting Marley, their new housemate. As with anything, adjustments continue to be made accordingly. Be aware of everything. “If there is a dog bone on the floor, don’t walk over it, thinking you’ll pick it up later. Pick it up now,” said Samantha. It may sound exhausting to have to always be on one’s toes, but Samantha adds, “Nothing worthwhile is going to come easy. Just remember to incorporate training in every day life and it will become second nature to your total lifestyle.”

Some Tips For Introducing the Dog to the Baby.

kTraining should be done in your home. kIncorporate training in every day life. “Practice recall. Do something, every day,” Matt reiterated. kUse the resources available to you to keep your dog mentally stimulated. Daycare, dog walking services. kCBD oil is amazing for dogs. kKnow your dog. There is no need to rush the introduction of baby to dogs. kGate off certain areas of the house. “This has helped us tremendously,” said Samantha. kCommunicate with your partner. Things change daily. Talk to make sure there is a good flow in the home and the relationship. kYou’ve done your homework and your obedience training is as it should be. Trust it. kBe aware of your dog’s body language. Any behavior you’re

not comfortable with, recall your dog. kWhatever triggers an upset – thunder, barking at the mail- man – remember, cortisol levels will rise. Those levels can remain high for up to 18 hours. If your dog has had a bad day, don’t push him, especially if he’s showing signs he’s anxious or not interested. Give him space and time. kShoving your dog off to the side after the baby is home and ignoring him will set your dog up for failure. Your dog will become depressed and heart- broken. Do something fun with your dog every day to keep him happy and stimulated. kIf you find you’re not able to handle both dog and new baby, consider rehoming your dog with a friend, family member or rescue group. It’s the most unselfish thing you can do for your dog.
