Agility foundation is all about
working with cones, tunnels, and touch targets. It’s the bare bones of you and Fido becoming a team that can read one another throughout a numbered course. Much of agility has to do with the han- dler/person as much as it does the dog. You’ll definitely want to learn about your maneuvering at an easier level than when your dog is racing at top speed. The dog also learns how to use his body better too. Contrary to popular belief, dogs don’t just know how to follow you through a course or execute obstacles. Foundations will teach them proper jumping form, turning, and how to actu- ally follow your signals to go in the right direction. It might seem a little lackluster to start, but know it sets you both up for optimal success. As you climb the agility ladder, the
sport will begin to blossom into a top notch bonding activity. Generally when you start, it’s difficult to stop. Once you have put in all your hard-earned training, you can consider signing up for your first competition. Agility is always great fun, but just like the CGC you have an opportunity to earn titles and certificates for your dog through the AKC. Local clubs will host what’s referred to as sanc- tioned agility tests, where your dog per- forms on a course in front of a qualified judge. It’s a great opportunity to show off all you have learned and how in sync you and your furry companion have become. Most clubs will even offer practice runs leading up to the event so that you and your buddy can test out your skills in the

environment before diving head first into the ring. Not too sure you have that compet-
itive edge? That’s alright too! The AKC also hosts trick dog titles where most of the obstacles in agility can be performed as a part of the trick repertoire. You can earn your novice, intermediate, and expert titles with some agility under your belt. Plus since you’ve obtained the all-important CGC you get some free points right off the cuff! There’s a whole new world to explore just from taking part in that single sport and there’s some- thing for everyone who gets involved. Any breed of dog is capable of doing
agility. It’s less about the dog and more about their engagement with their han- dler and their desire to work. Herding breeds do tend to excel, but don’t let this deter you. Everything from Great Danes to Chihuahuas have achieved in agility and have looked good doing it, too! Check out your local dog club training facilities and see who’s offering. There’s a path for wherever you want to go when you’re searching for fun beyond the CGC.
