Behind the scenes with the photographer
What Georgina Bottriell loves best about her job is that no two shoots are the same. She is thrilled by the spontaneity of the day, telling us how the most unexpected, marvellous moments can happen on a wedding day
"That is truly what I love the most; the diversity, the magic and pure human emotion that each wedding brings," says photographer Georgina. "I always feel incredibly privileged when a couple decides to book me, allowing me to be part of one of the most important days of their life. My ultimate goal is to make a couple feel comfortable enough to be themselves, to have fun and forget that I am there really. My approach is predominantly to use natural light as much as possible giving those final photos a greater depth.
"Two weddings that were truly different, but equally magical happened on one of the hottest and rainiest days of this year. However, both weather extremes still saw beautiful moments, which highlighted not just the couple's joy, but also showcased some of the most stunning areas of natural and architectural beauty that the Island has to offer. Luckily, for the rainy day, we had the grandeur of Northwood House allowing me to capture some wonderful moments for the couple. The groom was extremely fond of Lego, to be specific, Star Wars Lego. It became a theme throughout the day, including some ingenious button holes, rings boxes and cake toppers. Even the bride's sons decided to reenact 'The Force' being present,
while waiting for the registrar. No photoshop I promise, this shot was caught as is! Great fun and again, totally on the spur of the moment.
"I shot the second wedding in July, on one of the hottest and brightest days of the year, which for those who know can be challenging for photographers. I was so lucky, however, as this beautiful family wedding had three locations throughout the day giving variety and shade from the glaring sun. The hot day did reward us though with a spectacular sunset with amber evening light fading into a majestic magenta purple haze.
"The private shots were done around Newtown Creek, ending at Shalfleet Village Hall for a wonderful rural reception. It was one of the most emotional weddings I have been to. I do shed a tear at all the weddings I attend, I guess I can't help it. You see love at its most poignant and raw and that inspires my work, however, this wedding really moved me. It had loss, struggle and through it all, such love. Newtown Creek was a fantastic location, the natural landscape lent itself so well in framing the couple, who hold this place so close to their hearts. In my experience those emotional ties provide a depth to a photo that time will not fade."
