SELFIE REALITY CHECK

We spied this rather cool post on social which shows that first impressions don’t give the whole story. But the post is still more revealing and speaks volumes about social media pressures on body confidence.

“The photo on the left was taken early one morning, with trousers slouched, the middle photo was taken literally seconds later. Trousers pulled up tight, different angle. I think we all agree the middle picture has me looking much slimmer and leaner, but I don’t look like this all the time from every angle. The final photo on the right is after I’ve been paying very close attention to nutrition. That’s okay for a short period, like getting ready for a beach holiday, but I couldn’t live like this all the time. I’d not enjoy my food or socialise as much as I really like. I’m actually most happy on the left, and probably have more energy. The extra weight doesn’t mean I’m less worthy, no one loves me less, I carry out my job just as well and I’m just as healthy and fit. Life is far more important than how we look! Don’t let what you see on social media influence the way you feel about you. As long as you’re healthy and doing your best then you’re winning”

Michaela is passionate about nutrition and leading a healthy balanced lifestyle, due to growing up as a dancer: “Being part of the dancer world and culture left me feeling insecure, fat and ugly. They seemed to want only very thin girls and I didn’t fit their mould.

“After trying endless diets and over-exercising, not being able to achieve my goals and feeling worse about myself, I stumbled across a fitness and nutrition coach online. He was speaking of a healthy, balanced lifestyle, being able to eat your favourite foods and not starve yourself or kill yourself with too much exercise, but still see results.”

This inspired Michaela to train and then qualify as a nutritional advisor with a diploma recognised by the Association for Nutrition. She has since gone on to create Michaela Marie’s Healthy Living with the aim of helping others and to educate people in the ways of a balanced lifestyle, putting an end to “diet” culture and “slimming clubs”. Her approach is that everything your body needs you can gain from eating real foods, the amount is dependent on your lifestyle and your body type.
