osting fundraising events across the Island - including Cakes for Cancer, the Inflatable Rainbow Run, Drive-in
Films for Christmas and more - the inspirational team has so far raised around £80,000. A final push to raise the remaining £20,000 is now under way, to enable the big build to begin at the end of March.
A staggering 6,000 people on the Island are facing cancer at any one time - and that number is set to double by 2020, due to an ageing population and earlier diagnosis. However, medical advances in recent years have led to much higher survival rates. But who offers support for the emotional impact of this aggressive disease? Wessex Cancer Trust knows only too well the need to look after the wellbeing of those affected by cancer. The support this charity offers is invaluable to both patients and their families.
Services currently available at the centre include befriending,
professional counselling and complementary therapies, such as hypnotherapy, yoga, reflexology and massage. Wessex Cancer Trust gets no central funding, so relies entirely on fundraising and donations to provide services like this for free. The charity is also behind the Southampton and Portsmouth ‘Daisy Bus’ services, which transport Islanders to their mainland hospital appointments for free.
Wessex Cancer Trust has acquired the building next door to its current Isle of Wight centre and plans to knock through and refurbish the whole site, in a bid to future-proof Wessex services and expand what they already do.
The new building will include three new treatment rooms, a quiet befriending area, a community space for groups to meet, an office area, as well as a flexible space for activities and classes. The revamp will bring the building into the 21st century, creating a valuable community hub and local support network.
