businesswoman’s gritty determination. She had started her own business in the late 19th century — an era in which the business world was heavily dominated by men.

Laura found her inspiration even closer to home, describing her mum, Caroline, as a major grafter, who has shown what it takes to be a brilliant business woman.

BeCalmed was first started from Caroline's home, and has adapted around changing family life in the years since. Having a family was an important goal for Caroline. It wasn't until after she had fulfilled this aim that she started thinking she'd like to do more.

"I have never had a clear career path, but I have always enjoyed looking after people, which is what drew me to the health and wellbeing sector when I left college," said Caroline. "I do love a new project, so I look out for opportunities to do this which has helped grow the business to where it is now.

"With a family at home and elderly parents, life is busy. My time is split between clinic days at BeCalmed and working from my office at home."

Caroline also takes time out to meet with other women in business and network at The Chamber of Commerce and Cowes Business Association. BeCalmed was recently nominated for a Customer Service

Daughter, Laura Hurley, never imagined she'd be working in the holistic and beauty industry, but found herself fascinated by the sports massage and injury therapy her mother was learning.

"I took a taster course in facials and fell in love with doing treatments and looking after clients," said Laura. "I just kept taking courses from there to keep becoming a more advanced therapist.

"We would love to grow the business even more, so we are always looking for the latest trends and opportunities. I love going to London to see what is new that we can bring to the Island."

Caroline even manages to find some time to look after her own fitness and wellbeing, by cycling, and taking part in pilates and other fitness classes.

"I love cycling as you feel so free and the Isle of Wight is a wonderful place to cycle. Gurnard Beach is great at any time of the year. We regularly walk our dogs along the seafront there, where there is a lovely coffee shop, the pub and the everchanging Solent.

BeCalmed has recently opened The Island Wellbeing Centre, where independent therapists can rent rooms. Caroline has plans to expand further in the next year or so.

When Laura's not working, she likes to stay as active as possible. "I love to lift weights at the gym as well as swimming and the odd yoga class thrown in somewhere. We have two male springer spaniels at home too, so they need a lot of entertaining. All of this helps me to get rid of any stress and anxiety I may be holding on to, as well as giving me some me time.

"After a busy week at work I love nothing more than putting my feet up with a good film and a face mask on... possibly with a glass of bubbly too."

Laura believes that everyone should keep falling in love with their profession - whether that is by training in something new, taking a refresher course or spotting what new trends are coming through.
