SENIORS GOLF

won by Alf Carlier with 31 points. Alf is now 96 and is an honorary member. Later in the year on 16th October the first ever Seniors Open in the West was held at Long Ashton and won by Walter King then aged 81. Nowadays, almost every golf club within a 50 mile radius of Long Ashton has a Seniors Section and a Seniors Open. One of our Seniors and a great supporter of the Section was Brigadier General
Manley James VC, DSO, MBE, MC, DL, probably the most highly decorated member in the history of Long Ashton Golf Club. Te Manley James Trophy was presented to the Seniors Section in 1976 (see page 58). Today, as then, the AGM is preceded by a Seniors Lunch, unfortunately,
not 10s.6d as then priced. Records show that of the 6 matches played in 1963, when membership stood at 50, 5 were won. In 1992, with 150 on the books, the Seniors will play 27 matches, 14 competitions plus Winter and Summer foursomes competitions. All the trophies for these competitions have been donated over the years, by members of the Seniors Section (see page 58). Te fixture list for 1964 showed that matches were played against Hen bury, Weston-super-Mare, Saltford, Bath, Worlebury and Lansdown. Tese same Clubs appear on the fixture list for 1992 demonstrating the close ties with surrounding Clubs set up and nurtured by the Seniors Sections of these Clubs. In 1965, the Seniors played the Ladies for the first time and a Seniors
expedition was made to Frilford Heath. Te rules governing the management of the section were drawn up in 1965 and these have remained substantially unchanged to this day. Te Walter King and Joe Bennett Open competitions were established in
1966 the former with a minimum age of 65 and the latter 60. Tese competitions are still running and are usually oversubscribed. Players come from as far away as Ross-on-Wye, Marlborough, Tidworth and Broadstone which is a very flattering endorsement of the excellence of our course and the hospitality of our members. 1967 saw the first recorded Captain’s Day. Some concern was expressed as to
whether there would be enough caddies to go around the more senior members. Tere was also a great deal of discussion among the Committee as to how to get more members of the Seniors to support the matches and competitions and this is still a problem. At this time it was agreed that the running of the Section had grown to such
an extent that it would be wise to appoint a Vice-Chairman. Cliffe Glover was chosen and he was to serve the Seniors from its inception until he died in 1981. Tis year, 1967, Wally Smithers, the retired Club Professional, was made an honorary member of the Seniors.
