CHAPTER 1 Preface M
UCH of the information about Long Ashton Golf Club’s history, set out on the following pages, has been abstracted from the Minutes of Committee
meetings. We are fortunate that the original Minute Book covering the inaugural meeting on November 20th 1893 is intact and this book includes a list of the members and their addresses in 1898 and records the early developments up to 1901. Sadly one very important Minute Book which covers the
period from 1901-1914 has not been found, hence we have a gap in the development of Long Ashton Golf Club which is not easy to fill. All the other Minutes Books and records are intact and are retained in the Clubhouse. We have attempted to abstract information from local newspapers
for the missing period and I thank Alf Gale, Don Flook, George Box and Alan Shipman for the tedious research work they undertook on our behalf. We have also had advice and help from our Long Ashton Local History Societies, the Malago Society, the Bristol Records Office and many village residents. Some details of our Club’s history have been described by senior
members with good memories - perhaps a contradiction in terms. Harold Stokes, Alan Lyon, Vic Marshall, Vic Harrison, Ron Kingston and Reg Shore have been particularly helpful. Harold Stokes was a caddy during the 1914- 1918 war. Abstracts written and collected by our former Club Secretary, Ray Burniston, have been included and we have an interesting tape recording he made in 1985 with Tom Barnes and Jack Ayres who were in their 80’s at that time and who had been employed on the course before the first world war. Several chapters of this Long Ashton Golf Centenary Book have been
written by members of different sections of our Club and their names are recorded with their contributions in the Contents page. Denis Scanlan, our Professional, has provided details about his fellow professionals and I have included notes on other members who have made outstanding contributions to the history of Long Ashton Golf Club. Te Managing Secretary, Barry Manning, has provided details of the Club staff, particularly about former Secretaries and Clubhouse staff. Te Ladies Section has been written as a joint effort by the 1992 Ladies
Committee and they have derived most of their information from the early Club Minute Books and from the Ladies Minute Books which started in 1914.
