LONG ASHTON PROFESSIONALS
81 Since turning a Tour Professional, attached to Long Ashton, Andrew has had
a glittering and successful career. He was 3rd in the Portugese Open in 1987, 5th in the Italian Open in 1988 and between 1988 and 1991 finished well in many events in the tour, moving slowly up the order of merit table. Plate 56 shows the leader board in the Open Golf Championship at Muirfield in 1987, when Andrew was leading the strong International field in the first-round. In 1991 Andrew (Sherbie to his many friends) had his first major tour win
in the Madrid Open. In 1992 he held off a challenge from Nick Faldo to win the Spanish Open Plate 57) and in this season his best so far, he has finished 30th in the Volvo Order of Merit with winnings of £154,000 - a most remarkable achievement.
DAVID RAY David joined Long Ashton as a Junior in 1970 and won his first trophy, the
Junior Challenge Bowl, in 1977. He played regularly for both the 1st and 2nd Long Ashton league team from 1976 to 1980 and also played in the Gloucestershire County Team during the same period. In 1979, David lost the final of the British Boys Championship to Ronan
Rafferty who has since excelled in the Volvo European Tour. David was selected to play for England in 1981 and again in 1982 in the same team as Andrew Sherborne (see page 80). Most Long Ashton members have been aware that David Ray was one of the longest drivers of a golf ball in the South West. Some will recall that he drove through the green on our 6th hole (383 yards) in 1981 and had to chip back on to the green. David modestly said “the wind helped a little”. David turned Professional in late 1982 and was placed first in the European Tour School at La Manga in 1983. He won the European under 2S’s (Lowndes Lambert) Tournament at Sunningdale in 1984 and again in 1986 each worth £10,000. In 1990, David had many good finishes in the Tour particularly noteable were 4th in the Wang 4 Stars, 9th in the Irish Open and 10th in the Madrid Open. Injury forced David to play on the Challenge Tour
in 1992 and he has had many good wins. However, in November 1992 he returned to Montpelier in Southern France and has qualified to play in the Volvo European Tour in 1993 – we wish him success (Plate 58).
