LONG ASHTON GOLF CLUB STAFF A big changed occurred in 1920 when the first full-time Head Greenkeeper,
Walt Tyrell, was appointed and Attwood became Professional only. Tyrell was an Australian ex-serviceman with very colourful language according to Tom Barnes and Henry Burge, two of the assistants. He was in charge of the course for nearly 40 years and during this time Long Ashton had the reputation for being the best kept Course in Bristol with exceptionally fine greens and fairways. “Blink” Attwood went to Filton Golf Club as Professional/Head Greenkeeper in
the mid 1920 ‘s and Ivor Scoones our present Head Greenkeeper worked with him at that Club aſter the second World War. George Morgan (see Chapter 8, page 66) worked on the course in the 1930’s and
was later appointed Head Greenkeeper at Bristol & Cliſton Golf Club before moving to Kingsdown). In return, Mark Ashley, who worked at our neighbouring Club was appointed Head Greenkeeper at Long Ashton in 1960 when Walt Tyrell was discharged. Apparently Walt had frequent disagreements with the Club Secretary, Major Frank Fear and the Committee dismissed both - no tribunals in those days. In 1963, Ivor Scoones joined the staff at Long Ashton and was promoted to Head
Greenkeeper in 1966. He has had a staff of three or four assistants over the last twenty six years. Te longest serving assistant was Henry Burge (47 years) who in addition to being most reliable, was a first class golfer in his heyday. Mervyn Gray also managed the greens for almost twenty four years and in 1989 moved to Clevedon Golf Club to work with Barry Reeves the Head Greenkeeper who also worked at Long Ashton for a time. Our present assistant Greenkeepers
are Peter and Mark Cox and Peter Baynton (see Colour Plate 20). Tey, like the Head Greenkeeper, have found it difficult to continually maintain and improve the course condition while at the same time deal with more golfers, more competitions and more visiting societies. Te Greenkeepers training has been improved considerably over the years to enable staff to handle expensive and
