1962 and the Ashton Vase in 1970-a truly remarkable achievement (see Chapter 3, Plate 32). In 1963, Bill Littler won the County Championship at Knowle aſter a three way


play-off, he was Captain of the County team in 1967 /8 and was elected President of the Gloucestershire Golf Union in 1973. Bill served the Club well, and was elected Captain in 1965. He was involved


before that as Chairman of the Green, in redesigning the 16th hole to the present two-tier green and also in the major tree planting scheme (see Chapter 12).


J .K.R. (KEN) GRAVENEY Ken Graveney joined Long Ashton Golf Club in the late 1950’s with a handicap


of four. He quickly made his presence felt by winning the Victory Cup in 1960, the Club Championship in 1962 and the Ashton Vase in 1971 (see Plate 32). In the 1960’s, Ken played regularly in the Gloucestershire County Team and


was elected Captain in 1971/2. He won the County Championship at Cotswold Hill in 1968. Ken and his brother Tom, the International cricketer, played a round of golf in


1959 at Long Ashton with Peter Tompson who at that time was Open Champion- Peter was round in 69 according to Vic Marshall who forgot to take a photograph. In 1972, when Ken Graveney was County Captain, he presented the Duchess


Salver to the player achieving the highest number of points in the following six County events:


County Championship Ashton Vase City and County at Henbury


Failand Scratch at Bristol & Cliſton Knowle Gold Medal Ross Scratch Cup


Andrew Sherborne is the only Long Ashton Winner of this Trophy to date (1983) but Owen Layton was runner up to Gary Wolstenholme in 1992.


JOHN WRIGLEY John Wrigley joined Long Ashton Golf Club in 1976 from Te Royal


Johannesburg Golf Club having previously been at Hartlepool Golf Club where he was Club Champion for a record eight times. John won the Durham County Championship in 1965 when his handicap was one and he played for the County 32 times. Since John Wrigley arrived at long Ashton he has served on the General


Committee and as Chairman in 1986 he had an important influence in the restructuring of the Club Management.
