CHAPTER 10 Long Ashton Professionals I

N the early years, in addition to maintaining the course, it was part of the Head Greenkeeper’s job to teach beginners how to play golf and to sell equipment.

Tis arrangement continued until aſter the 1914-18 war and the names of our Professional/Greenkeepers are recorded in the early Minute Books. Te following were appointed: E. Richards in 1909; P. Shoesmith in 1911; Albert Kam in 1914 and P. Attwood in 1916. It is not clear what proportion of their time was spent on each facet of the

job. However, Albert Kam was congratulated in 1914, for making extensive . improvements to the Course despite the shortage of greenstaff who were away on active service. It seems likely that the teaching and selling activities were quite small in view of the number of members and the size of the Professional’ s workplace and shop which was only about 10 x 20ſt (see Chapter 8, Plate 47). Percy “Blink” Attwood served the Club well for eleven years. At the beginning

he was in sole charge, oſten working with members on the course. Later he had a staff of at least two (Hynam and Barnes are mentioned) and this continued until 1920, when the Committee appointed Walt Tyrell as Head Greenkeeper (see Chaper 9, page 72). Attwood apparently preferred the greenkeeping side of the job, although when he was offered the position of second greenkeeper under Tyrell in 1927, he turned this down and instead moved to Filton as Head Greenkeeper.

F.C. (TED) JEWELL F. C. (Ted) Jewell (Plate 15) was the first real Professional at Long Ashton Golf

Club. He was appointed in 1927 and stayed until the second World War in 1942. Ted Jewell was known to several of our senior golfers and he had an excellent reputation as a player and teacher. In 1932, the Long Ashton Ladies Section gave a purse of £10 for a match between Jewell and S.P. Easterbrook the Knowle Professional who was considered to be the best local Professional at that time. We have no record of who won the prize but the Minutes record later in the year that a subscription list was started for Ted Jewell to play in the Open Golf Championship. Te Minutes record again in 1935 that 15 guineas was raised to cover Jewell’s expenses at the Open but we have no information on how he played.
