THE MIDDLE PERIOD

15

and 9th and the 16th and 17th holes did not exist on the 1921 plan. Te old 16th played from near the present 3rd tee was later shortened and the bogey three 18th hole back to the Clubhouse was abandoned. Te plan shows several other minor changes in the shape of various holes and

it shows the position of the old Pro’s shop near the first tee. Member disliked the first hole intensely because of the long drag up the hill from the Clubhouse and this hole was abandoned later. Te layout was changed slightly in 1925 and the description and length of each

hole is given in several different handbooks issued by the Club between 1926 and 1930 (undated). Te starting point was near the old Clubhouse 150 yards south of the present 4th green and the finish was leſt of the second pond on the 4th. Te present 8th and 9th holes were now part of the Course as the 5th and 6th and the old 5th up the hill noted above was abandoned. Te lengths and description of the holes in the 1928 Handbook is as follows: (Te figure in brackets is the present hole number)

1st hole 330 yards (abandoned later) Over undulating ground, pond on leſt of fairway to trap pulled tee shot; plantation to the right (Te Folly). A well-placed second is necessary to find the green.

2nd Hole 300 yards (5). Ground rises slightly from the tee, gorse on leſt, boundary wall on the right. Well-bunkered near the green (a ladder was provided so that the fairway could be seen).

3rd Hole 390 yards (6). Tis is one of the finest two-shot holes in the district, being slightly dog-legged and the rather narrow fairway undulating and forming a plateau with gorse-covered slopes both right and leſt, so that two accurately placed shots are well rewarded; the green is slightly raised.

4th Hole 335 yards (7). Ground rises from the tee with fairway guarded on the right with gorse.

5th Hole 315 yards (8). A well placed tee shot necessary with a wood on the right of fairway and quarry on the leſt.

6th Hole 150 yards (9). An accurate shot required to find a well-guarded hole.

7th Hole 365 yards (10). A good carry over road with raised grass bunkers right and leſt. Green well guarded by hazards.

8th Hole 300 yards (11). Fairly long carry over broken ground and deep hollows. Out of bounds immediately on the right and finishing with an undulating green well bunkered.

9th Hole 400 yards (12). Bunkers arranged in eschelon on the fairway on right must be carried to get into position to reach the green with a good second. A raised green with entrance from the right, and well bunkered.
