THE EARLY YEARS
the absence of trees; tree planting had started only a year earlier in 1965. During the Martini competition the Professionals were allowed a free drop from the young plantations. In 1969, the Coca Cola Young Professionals Tournament was held jointly at
Bristol and Cliſton and Long Ashton and the final round was played at the former Club. In 1972, the roles of the two Clubs were reversed and the event was won at Long Ashton by Peter Oosterhuis with a score of 278 for four rounds. At that time Peter was one of the best young professionals in the Country. Later that year he visited us again to play in a Pro-Celebrity Tournament which was organised by the Variety Club of Great Britain (Plate 31). Tis was a very popular event for the villagers who invaded the Course to see Harry Secombe, Charlie Drake, Ronnie Corbett and many other well-known celebrities from the world of show business and sport. Henry Cooper was the winner on this memorable occasion. Te Coca Cola Tournament came back to
Bristol & Cliſton and Long Ashton in 1974, this event was won by Dale Hayes of South Africa with 274. Te top prize for this event was only £500 and the entrance fee was £3, so many of the young competitors were grateful to Long Ashton members for the offer of free board and lodgings during the Tournament. In recent years several of the top amateur
tournaments have been played at Long Ashton. Tese include the English Girls Tournament in 1988, the Ladies British Open in June 1991 and the English Boys Stroke-Play Championship (Carris Trophy) in August 1991. Tis latter tournament was won by Iain Pyman from Sand Moor in Yorkshire, with a four round total of 284. Only three of the competitors broke 70 in one of their rounds, an indication that Long Ashton can provide a stiff test for the best amateur golfers. of CLIC (Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood Trust) since 1981. Tese team events have attracted many of the best national and international amateur golfers in the country and are well supported by local golfers. Several Long Ashton members help with the local organisation and the Charity has raised over £130,000 for CLIC in eleven years association with the Club. Te amateur record
