Healthy Body, Healthy Mind: Considering Alzheimer’s Prevention

he statistics are staggering. Al- zheimer’s disease is currently the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, in the years between 2000 and 2015, while heart disease deaths have decreased by 11%, deaths related to Alzheimer’s disease have increased by 123%. Alzheimer’s currently affects 5.7 million Americans, a number that is estimated to rise to nearly


14 million people by 2050, which would mean that it was affl icting over 3% of the total population. The economic impact in terms of health care costs are dizzying, not to mention the extreme emotional turmoil this disease has on an individ- ual’s surrounding community of family and friends. It is vital that we take a long look at the progression of this terrible disease and consider any and all pos- sible interventions that may reduce our individual risk.
