Business Spotlight John Pittari,
New Morning Market 1. How did New Morning get started?
Actually, a charter of 20 people started the store, founded as New Morning Trading Co. in 1971. It came out of the Back to the Earth movement, it was as much a philosophy as it was a lifestyle aligned with the natural world and the way we were meant to live and eat. I wanted to lead a rightful liveli- hood, to make a difference, that’s why New Morning became my career – my life. At fi rst most everything was in barrels along with many local products like raw milk, fresh yogurt and cottage cheese - handmade on the farm, honey and maple syrup.
2. Why are you passionate about your industry?
Believe it or not, Connecticut was going to get rid of the Dept. of Agriculture! Our grass roots efforts kept it in place. Now our state has had the largest increase in the number of farms and farmland in production. My passion is supporting local farms by introducing their products to our customers to create a demand. For example, working with Paul Bucciaglia, from Fort Hill Farm, what started as offering for sale a dozen fl ats of organic vegetable seedlings has bloomed to sell- ing tens of thousands of plants each Spring.
3. What sets you apart from other health food stores?
Our product vetting standards are extremely high. We have a mission to rebuild a local, healthy and sustainable food community - that is the main differentiator and what infl uences all major decisions and every day operational decisions. Our produce department really takes care of our producers and we often deal with small local farm- ers who may only have a small crop to sell. The best part is you’ll fi nd things on our shelves you won’t fi nd anywhere. Hyper local and hyper innovative products.
4. What can customers expect from working with you?
The value we place on educating the community. Food is how we nourish our body, relationships, sense of community, and soul. We need to educate the public that food isn’t a commodity, that it really does cost $8 to bring organic heirloom tomatoes to market and they are worth every penny. That farmers need a living wage to stay on the farm. We spend the least amount of our income on our food than ever before– and much of the disease and sickness we see is a result of that.
5. What plans do you have for the future for your business?
In early 2019 we’re opening the Vitality Center on our 2nd fl oor and will be offering nutritional consulting, Naturopathic medicine, massage, yoga, personal counseling, skincare, infrared sauna treat- ments and a community center for educational events.
6. Tell us about the best memory you have about being a holistic business owner.
We started Our Earth Day event in our parking lot which grew to 5,000 people attending each year. Then we relocated to our new store and didn’t have the space for an event that size. It was amazing how the Town agreed to support the event so we could hold it at the Hollow Park. Now, Pomperaug River Watershed Coalition operates it as a fundraiser and it’s grown to 7,000 people which is the largest Earth Day event in CT.

r. Kurt Beil uses a comprehensive holistic and integrative approach to increase health and
address illness.
1. Why are you passionate about your specialty? Knowing how effective it is helping people achieve better quality of life and wellbeing. Helping reduce their symptoms and suffering, and seeing it work. It’s a whole way of being and understanding how life works and working with that to help certain individuals.
2. What sets you apart from other practitioners in the holistic fi eld?
I have a unique set of skills combining Chinese and holistic medi- cine, taking every person I work with and looking at the broad view of their personal care. Not just symptoms but who they are as a person... each person has custom solutions.
3. What can patients expect from working with you?
Ninety minutes to discuss symptoms, health history, and lifestyle (habits, stress reduction techniques) and come up with ways to address that through custom care.
4. Tell us about the best memory you have about being a holistic practitioner.
A patient I am working with now has 23 different complex diagnoses, has been to over 20 practitioners over the space of 10 years all with no benefi t. We have been able to work with her over the year and she has had substantial improvement. I was told we not only changed her life but saved her life.
