Business Spotlight Dr. Suzanne Chester, DC H

olistic medicine considers all aspects of a patient’s life: social, emotional, behavioral, as well as

physical – which of course includes the relationships and dynamics within the family.

1. Why are you passionate about your specialty?

Natural health care has always resonated with me. We weren’t a family that took medicines excessively or ran to the doctor frequently. My mother just helped support our bodies nutritionally and let our bodies heal naturally. I appreciate every opportunity to assist people in understanding that their bodies have the amazing capability to heal, but that it might need a little “help” via nutritional, structural or emotional therapies.

2. What sets you apart from other practitioners? Collaborative Natural Health Partners

ollaborative Natural Health Partners offers a new model of primary care- truly integrative with a team of family medicine osteopathic physicians, naturopathic physicians and acupuncturists offering functional medicine, advanced diagnostic testing, homeopa- thy, acupuncture, Bowen therapy, craniosacral therapy, nutrigenomics, bioidentical hormones, ozone therapy, nutritional consults, intrave- nous vitamin therapy, botanical medicine, group lifestyle classes and more to tailor a customized treatment plan for each patient, treating the underlying causes of disease. Patients feel empowered and sup- ported in a way that helps them make lasting change.

C 1. What sets you apart from other holistic practices?

The collaboration between physicians is unique in our practice. On a daily basis, there is a grand rounds between board certifi ed family medicine physicians, acupuncturists and naturopathic physi- cians. We are committed to education and the community in a unique way with classroom space for nutrition, mind-body medicine and kitchen medicine including things like tincture and soap making.

2. What can patients expect from working with you? We develop a relationship and understand the goals and health

of individuals. We coordinate with other practitioners in and outside of the offi ce to a unifi ed team supporting the patient. Patients receive a plan of care that is comprehensive and very individualized.

3. What plans do you have for the future for your practice?

We have joined ECHN/Manchester hospital where we will be offering inpatient services, a very unique relationship for naturopathic physicians, one of very few in the state. We also welcome another primary care physician, Dr. Brad Brooks to our team in 2019. We anticipate a larger facility for our West Hartford satellite.

4. Tell us about the best memory you have about being a holistic practitioner.

I was pregnant with my daughter, who is now fi ve years old when I started working with the local hospital. It wasn’t until Spring 2018 when a meeting of all the local physicians came together to change the bylaws of the hospital to allow us to join as medical staff. What a proud and cool moment when my colleagues—ob/gyns, surgeons, family medicine doctors and the likes, gave testimony about the value of naturopathic medicine. They all talked about the patients we’ve helped and how much we care. The medical model is changing, and partly because of what we are doing here in Manchester.

5. What do you like the most about being a part of Natural Nutmeg?

Community and education. Two of our core values. We can help educate people about their bodies and their health and help nurture a healthier community.

10 Natural Nutmeg - 10BEST Awards/Essential Living Guide

I provide individualized care for the whole family. I work well with other physicians or specialty therapists to co-treat when needed or to make appropriate referrals that would be in the best interest of the patient’s healthcare needs.

3. Tell us about the best memory you have about being a holistic practitioner. I periodically utilize the Webster Technique during pregnancy

when babies are breech. The maneuver balances the pelvic muscles and ligaments to reduce tension and twisting of the uterus which of- fers greater opportunity for the baby to move into the proper position for delivery. It brings me great joy to hear from the mothers that the baby has turned and aligned properly, usually after the fi rst treatment, so those babies can be delivered naturally.

Paula Scopino/Sacred Rivers Yoga S

acred Rivers Yoga offers yoga-therapy, nutritional consultations, massages, skin care, day spa, and

workshops throughout the year. We have programs for family and kids so everyone can experience yoga, and specialized yoga for people who suffer from MS.

1. Why are you passionate about your specialty?

I started to experience the benefi ts of yoga when I was 18, and started learning yoga from a book. I shared my results with family and friends, and I became passionate in sharing the physical and mental health benefi ts yoga provides.

2. What sets you apart from other businesses in the holistic fi eld?

Sacred Rivers is a place where we encourage people to listen to their bodies and offer many accommodating moves. We are not competitive on the yoga mat, we encourage people to move the way they feel best.

3. What plans do you have for the future?

We celebrated our 15th anniversary May 2018. We are looking to expand our yoga therapy school, an accredited program for people who want to teach yoga. 10% off class cards and memberships during the month of December.

4. What is the best memory you have about being a holistic business owner?

We had one client who thanked me for how much we helped her, because she had just gone through a divorce, a death in the family and other personal issues. I noticed this client began coming 3-4 times a week and she shared with us that she felt that yoga saved her life because it helped her cope and put her stresses aside. Those moments are gratifying because as a business owner holding the space can be diffi cult sometimes, and then when you hear something like that it reminds you why you are in the holistic practice.
