INTERNATIONAL TRADE

Evros is becoming increasingly popular with tourists

Ministry of National Defence. The centre intends to collaborate with NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence and other international cyber security organisations. Cyber security remains high on the agenda of the Lithuanian authorities and additional resource will be required in areas such as environment analysis, threat management, implementation and investigation into cyber incidents. Lithuania closed the Ignalina

nuclear power plant in 2009 which resulted in a reduction in power capacity. Lithuania is now trying to increase capacity by

developing sources of renewable energy and the construction of electricity and gas grids to connect Lithuania with neighbouring power markets. There are also plans to modernise older power plants and the potential construction of a new nuclear power plant. As a UK company looking to do

business in Lithuania, the plan to enter the market should include local representation in the form of a distributor. It is relatively easy to appoint a distributor and there are no legal barriers to agents and distributors operating for a UK company within Lithuania.

FIND LITHUANIAN PARTNERS

Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) is giving East Midlands companies the opportunity to meet with businesses from Lithuania when they visit the region in December for B2B matchmaking meetings. These companies are from the food and drink, cosmetics, textiles and 3D technology sectors and are looking for partners in the UK. For more information, and to book a meeting, please email eeninfo@emc- dnl.co.uk. EEN can help companies in the East Midlands enter new markets,

including Lithuania. EEN is the world’s largest business support network offering internationalisation services free of charge to SMEs.

For more information and to find out how EEN can help your business grow, contact 0333 320 0333, email eeninfo@emc- dnl.co.uk, tweet @EEN_Midlands or visit www.enterprise- europe.co.uk

Exploring the benefits of doing business in Evros

By Athanasios Pantazis and Leonidas Skerletopoulos, Financial Adviser and Marketing Consultant respectively at the Chamber of Evros

Evros is located at the Northeastern part of Greece on the European Border, neighbouring east Minor Asia, Turkey and the Balkan peninsula, Bulgaria. In recent years, foreign investments - mainly in energy, food

industry and tourism sectors - have been attracted to this region and transformed its landscape, contributing in creating a better context for further potential investment. Following statements from EU and US officials during the first Oil

and Gas Forum earlier this year, Evros appears to be a European energy hub after the construction of a floating LNG reception, storage and regasification unit, as well as the operation of Trans Adriatic gas Pipeline (TAP). The significant strengths of this region are traced back to:

• Its geostrategic location, connecting Europe and Asia • Ease of access - certified infrastructures that support quadruple intermodal transportation-ready infrastructures

• Growing trend of demand in hospitality, entertainment and tourism services

• Specialised and experienced human capital • Access to a pool of high income premium consumers - approximately 25 million consumers within a range distance of 250 miles.

The Evros region offers infrastructure and access to a promising

market (Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey) for leisure, tourism and business. As far as leisure and tourism is concerned, a strong growth trend of Turkish visitors has been established over recent years, driven by: • The quality of food based on Mediterranean gastronomy • The sea frontal area that includes 41km offering a variety of locations to enjoy swimming - mainly in summer periods

• The existence of four-star and five-star hotels offering luxury and premium services at reasonable and competitive pricing levels.

The above factors operate in synergy to strengthen Alexandroupoli’s

position as a promising and lucrative destination for Turkish, Bulgarian, Romanian and Greek markets. Alexandroupolis, the capital city of the Evros region, attracts business,

scientific, professional and cultural congresses and conferences. Evros is an alluring area to seek promising investments and business-related events and conferences.
