Careers take off with The Caterpillar Academy
The Leicestershire manufacturing plant of Caterpillar's Building Construction Products division in Desford has relaunched its pioneering apprenticeship programme with Derby College. The programme offers up to 140
young people per year for the next three years the opportunity to kick- start their future careers. The Caterpillar Academy was launched in 2011 and has supported more than 700 first-year apprentices. The company has teamed up
with Roundhouse Corporate, a division of Derby College, and lean manufacturing specialists Sigma to develop new training programmes for apprentices in the academy. Apprentices will combine
classroom-based theory with shop floor experience, including the opportunity to work alongside full- time staff in the assembly plant before returning to the academy to

Regional law firm BRM Solicitors has acted in a £110m mixed use shopping centre and 174-apartment residential unit development built in Acton, London. Acton town centre is
currently undergoing a wholescale regeneration, with the development due for completion in 2019 including the creation of 11 new retail units, a gym and 174 residential apartments. Having previously secured
retail pre-lets with M&S Simply Food, Wilko, Iceland, The Gym Ltd and Lidl – as well as the £69.5m residential development sale to a charitable housing association – BRM has now completed the £41.5m retail shopping centre sale.
BRM advised the land
owner and developer over the course of site preparation, redevelopment, marketing, funding and sale. Piers Slater, of developer
Reef Group, said: “We are excited to see the mixed use regeneration taking shape with completion due next year, providing retail and leisure facilities for Acton.”

complete their apprenticeship. Many are then given the opportunity to potentially progress to a further 18-month-long programme with wider work experience opportunities across the business. They can then apply for full-time positions at the company as well as higher education. Caterpillar’s Desford
Manufacturing Plant Manager Tony Carr said: “Last year, 97% of the young people either progressed with us or to other employers – proving that this approach of developing transferable employability skills, values and work ethic is a successful approach both for this company and the wider business community, including our own supply chain.”
Derby College Deputy Principal April Hayhurst, who heads the Roundhouse Corporate division, added: “We are delighted to be working with Caterpillar and Sigma to take the academy to the next level. “The PMO framework has been
co-designed for the company to develop the skills and attitudes that Caterpillar needs to grow its business. This approach will ensure the apprentices gain above and beyond the skills and knowledge within the apprenticeships, meeting Caterpillar’s specific needs and more. “This apprenticeship is a
fantastic opportunity to get the first foothold in the world of work.”

Wildgoose boosts workforce thanks to influx of new contracts
Derbyshire-based Wildgoose Construction is celebrating after winning almost £40m worth of contracts and boosting the numbers in its workforce. The company has been selected
to build a new £1.9m two-storey extension at Saffron Medical Centre in Leicester and industrial units at Albion Gateway in Burton, in a deal worth £5.7m. Wildgoose, based in Alfreton,
will also be building an £8.8m 84- bed care home in Stonnall, Staffordshire, and Brackley Primary
Care Centre, in Northamptonshire, in a contract worth £9.3m – as well as a 69-bed £6.9m care home in Ampthill, Bedfordshire. Another contract win involves a
high profile £6.7m project to remodel Northampton Museum and Art Gallery (pictured) for Northampton Borough Council. These latest orders come after
Wildgoose secured three contracts worth a total of £16m. These included an industrial unit in Burton, two pubs in Runcorn and Bradford and a care home in
Watford. As a result of recent orders, Wildgoose has employed eight new staff. Jonathan Wildgoose, Executive
Chairman of Wildgoose Construction, said: “We are delighted to win yet another order for a care home for the Restful Homes Group. To win repeat business is testament to the strong relationships we build with our clients. “We have taken on eight new
staff to bolster our talented workforce and we are looking ahead to an even brighter future.”
