SPOTLIGHT ON: LITHUANIA

Lithuania is located between northern and eastern Europe, and is the largest of the three Baltic States. The country recovered from the

recession quickly, and it’s currently among the fastest growing economies in the EU - its economy grew by two per cent in 2015. There are many similarities to

the UK in terms of doing business here. Lithuania has a large multilingual and educated population and English is widely spoken, particularly in business. The country is considered to be very stable both politically and economically with world-leading ICT capabilities. The Lithuanian government is

investing heavily in areas such as energy, transport, education, ICT and life sciences, paving the way for companies in the East Midlands to take a look at this country as a potential region for growth. The country also has a strong

transport infrastructure - as you would expect owing to its strategic location as the ‘gateway to Russia’ - with over 21% of its exports going there. There is a direct rail link between the two countries and over 70% of the Lithuanian population speak Russian. This route to market is

not without its challenges though, with relations between the EU and Russia somewhat strained, and there have been instances of trade embargoes and border crossing issues.

Lithuania will receive EUR6.8bn

of further EU financial support by 2020, and this will contribute to the country’s social, economic and business infrastructure development. This investment is expected to go to public services, where significant opportunities will exist for overseas companies to offer their products and expertise. There is a planned rail line to

link the Baltic States to Poland, with the project costing more than £3bn. This presents opportunities for Midlands businesses in areas such as engineering, project management, construction and rail technologies. Similarly in the education

sector, funding from Europe allows for the financing of a major modernisation of existing education facilities across all levels. Additionally, the Lithuanian government wants to develop further education networks for STEM subjects, special needs and vocational training. A national cyber security centre

was launched in Lithuania in January 2015 as a division of the
