Exports figures continue to rise despite uncertainties from Brexit

Recent Office for National Statistics figures shows that despite uncertainties such as Brexit negotiations, exports continue to grow, with exports increasing by 5.5%, growing to £33bn compared to last year’s figure. The statistics follow a recent visit

by the Chamber’s Head of International Trade Laura Howard to the biggest export port in the country, DP World in Southampton, which handles the equivalent of over two million 20ft containers every year. Laura said: “Alongside London

Gateway, DP World offers 27 weekly global services to meet growing demand worldwide for British products. These worldwide sea freight services are vital to exporters. In 2017, eight-out-of-ten of the fastest-growing destinations for UK exports were outside of the EU.” Rachel Morley, General Manager

at multi-award-winning Spatial Global, a Chamber International Trade member and host of the visit, said: “Visiting DP World is a very rewarding and valuable experience – it brings the world of international

trade very much into focus. Through bringing customers and partners to the port each year, I have seen the port grow enormously as demand continues to grow. With excellent onward motorway and rail, link containers can be back in the Midlands within a few short hours.” Nicholas Jones, of UK Export,

added: “Surprisingly, around 50% of the containers for export were empty - we need to redress the balance and export more. The world holds so much potential for British manufacturers, and freight to countries outside of Europe won't be much affected by Brexit.” Exporting has the potential to

transform businesses of all shapes and sizes and, whatever stage of the exporting journey a business is at, the Chamber’s highly experienced International team are on hand to assist.
