Mass spectrometry employing two analytical stages, typically separated in space (e.g., triple-quadrupole or quadrupole-time of flight) or separated in time (e.g., 3D ion trap).


• 416 tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry


A quantitative tandem mass spectrometer consists of two quadrupole mass spectrometers in series, with a (non-mass-resolving) radio frequency (RF)-only quadrupole between them to act as a cell for collision-induced dissociation. The first (Q1) and third (Q3) quadrupoles serve as mass filters. Precursor ions selected in Q1 are dissociated in the collision cell in the presence of an inert gas such as Ar, He or N2


. Resulting fragments


are passed through to Q3 where they may be filtered or scanned. This configuration is sometimes referred to as a triple-quad mass spectrometer and is often abbreviated QQQ.

Analysis of the composition of a complex sample by applying predefined selection criteria with the aim to quantify or verify the occurrence of previously identified sample components.


• 418 targeted quantitation


Quantitation experiments to determine the protein and/or peptides levels of known targets in biological samples.


• 419 therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM)


Clinical monitoring of patient drug concentrations in plasma, serum or blood in order to enhance treatment efficacy, or reduce toxicity. Typically used to treat patients taking marketed drugs with a narrow therapeutic range (those which can be easily under- or overdosed) often abbreviated to TDM.
