cent either didn’t know what Brooklands was, where it is or had never been... it shows how much more education we have to do! You can see from the photograph that Mary and
Graham enjoyed the day... I had my blast around the track in the lunchtime parade. These parades started a few years back with Brooklands putting on, for Bemsee, a pre-war ‘Hutchinson Hundred’- parade. In return we have had free space to promote the Museum. After quickly packing up I was off to face the
accidents and traffic congestion on the 150-mile journey to Mallory Park. Everyone said it would be quiet because there was this football thing on... I can tell you it made no difference to the M25 and M40. An early start on Sunday was necessary to set up
the stand before the circuit opened at 8.30am. The Norton Owners’ Club helped me out by specially transporting a very nice 1932 Norton Inter for the display, so with my two we had three machines on show. Karen and Jim Anderson helped out with the manning and we also managed to co-opt some of our non-Brooklands friends to give us a full rota of cover during a very hot day. Disappointingly the crowd was not at the level
we have seen it in the past, but despite that we had a lot of interest. The mix of two Brooklands era machines and my ‘modern’ (1972) racing Yamaha was a draw for the knowledgeable crowd. Many visitors expressed their disappointment that our Brooklands parade was not taking place this year, as it is one of the few occasions they can enjoy period bikes in action. Visitor feedback that I obtained, relating to
Brooklands, was even more worrying than from Brands on Saturday. I estimated 70 to 75 per cent of people had no knowledge of Brooklands! Track time for me was voluntarily reduced to
only two sessions, these were most enjoyable, with the Yamaha performing beyond expectations and easily crossing the finishing line at over 100mph – it was only the rider holding it back, sad thing old age! We had a full and rewarding weekend that
hopefully encouraged more people to visit the Museum. If any BT Members are interested in having a day with us at a motorcycle race meeting and helping us promote the Museum let us know via the BTM Office. You can enjoy being behind the scenes to see what is involved in taking part in an event.
