commemorative plaques. Monday 4th June was the last day of the tour
and we headed for the town of Naas to view Brian King’s classic vehicle collection. Brian’s father was a landowner and Brian noticed the poor distribution of fuels and heating oil in the neigh- bourhood. This developed into a lucrative business and enabled him to start collecting tractors and later cars and lorries. A boost came to his collection when a friend with a portfolio of over 50 vehicles suffered a stroke. A wheelchair could not get round his museum unless some 27 cars were sold and Brian bought some of them. Of the pre-war cars, I can only recall a Le Mans
Aston Martin, an Alfa Romeo 1750, an Essex, Rolls-Royce Ghost and late 1950s ERF and Foden bowsers painted in the company’s livery. Brian started up the engines of most of the cars and provided tea and cakes for us all. Thank you Brian. We all took different routes back but aimed to
be at Treacy’s around 4.00pm for the farewell barbecue with musical entertainment by Geraldine and her Kins. There was a quiz to be completed during Saturday and Sunday’s drive. The prize, a block of peat and a bottle of local gin, was won by Bruce Glover and Liz Greenwood.
Mullan to judge the ‘concours d’elegance’ at Danny Byrne’s Motoring Natter evening. The Paddock was packed with an eclectic display of vehicles of all marques and ages. If you have not attended one of Danny’s evenings you are missing out on something rather special. They are held throughout the year on the second Tuesday of each month from 7.00pm. Staying with the concours theme, this time at

the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed, the out- right winner of the 2018 ‘Cartier Style et Luxe’ was Colin Mullan’s wonderful 1972 Monteverdi 375. Colin admits that it was a bit of a wild card in the class for ‘Playboys’ Toys – Beautiful Cars for Beautiful People'. A full report on the car will appear in a later Bulletin. Congratulations Colin. Our BTMtv coverage of all the major events at
Brooklands continues to grow in content and popularity. Our Paddock ‘walkabouts’ are a great way to enjoy these events and learn more about the vehicles and their owners, drivers and riders.

With my forbears I am biased, but I have
always found the Southern Irish people to be proud yet humble, and imbued with huge kind- ness and generosity. A big thank you to all the Gordon Bennett organisers for a well-planned event (I understand that BTM will be welcome to return!) and to Angela Hume for a lovely tour. Edward Fitzpatrick
