Group will host a Begin- ners Photography course which commences in Mid- leton this Sunday, 8 July. The class will meet at the Midleton Park Hotel at 10am and receive a short theory of photography

From there, the group will venture out and about for practical work and instruc- tion from experienced pho- tographers in the group. The two-hour long class will continue over the next 6 weeks, with a break on the August Bank Holiday

Sunday. Cork Classes will re-

sume the following Sunday. Speaking with The East Journal, Denis

Barry (PRO of the East Cork Camera Group) said, “With regard to equipment needed, the cover

course general will photogra-

phy at first which would be applicable to the use of a camera phone. However,

as the course gets more

advanced, we recommend using a decent, compact, mirrorless camera or DSLR (Digitial Single Lens Reflex) camera.” The course, a must for all photography

enthusi-

asts or those looking for a fun way to spend Summer Sunday mornings, costs just €60 and includes not

only professional instruc- tion and feedback but 6 months membership of the East Cork Camera Group. “Places are limited”, ex- plained Denis, “and to sign up or for more details, please contact us through Facebook or email pro@ eastcorkcameragroup. ie”

Midleton Library to Host Exhibition Portraits Women of Cork and the US Navy

by SEAMUS WHELEHAN

A photographic exhibi- tion opening in Midleton next month focuses on the rarely seen women’s per- spective on the First World War. The

exhibition, creat-

ed by Historian Damian Shiels, opens at 12:15pm on 21 July and features over 100 images of Irish war brides who wed US Sailors. East Cork’s history has

always ebbed and flowed through its harbour, link- ing the island town with many world events, such as the First World War and the sinking of the Lusita- nia on 7 May 1915. The bombing of the ves-

sel brought the ravages of war home to Lower Har- bour communities such as Cobh, Aghada and White- gate, with many local women joining the 6,000 Irish Red Cross nurses to aid the war effort on the front lines in Flanders.

Two years later, on the 6

April 1917, US President Woodrow Wilson brought America into the War of Nations as a direct

re-

sponse to Germany’s indis- criminate attack on ships such as the Lusitania. On 4 May 1917 a flotilla

of 6 US destroyers led by USS Wadsworth

arrived

in the harbour area under Commander Joseph Taus- sig.

On arrival in the Port,

the van guard’s command- er met with the Royal Na- vy’s admiral Bailey who enquired

Commander Taussig
