Photos by DENIS O’FLYNN

The penultimate day of

the school year in Gaels- coil Mhainistir na Corann was one of celebration as the school celebrated the raising of their fourth green flag which is based on transport. Thursday June 28 was a day of non- stop sunshine reflected in the smiles and happiness

of the 500+ pupils of the school. The achieve- ment of the schools fourth green flag was a whole school effort with children staff and parents all play- ing their part in reducing the carbon footprint. Múinteoir Róisín Ní

Cheallaigh who is the co- ordinator of the Green school’s committee

lead

the proceedings on the day. Róisín was the teach- er who

originally pro-

moted the Green Schools message

to the school

many years ago and sup- ported all the initiatives down through the years as the school worked to achieve flags 1 2 and 3 which are based on waste reduction , energy and water conservation. In her presentation last Thurs- day Róisín quoted Jane Goodall “you cannot get through a single day with- out having an impact on

the world around you.

What you do makes a dif- ference and you have to decide what kind of differ- ence you want to make “. The Green schools initia- tive teaches valuable and important lessons to

our

children who have the re- sponsibility of passing on our planet to future gener- ations. We were delighted and

honoured that RDC, its leader Billy Jean and our

very own member of RDC Alyx Cahill agreed to be our very special guests on the day. They give an energetic and powerful performance to the children and Billy Jean spoke to the children and thanked them and their parents for their support in

their journey in Ire-

land’s Got Talent. A special song for the occasion was composed by teachers Neasa and

Aisling and sang by all the children before all pro- cessed led by the school bodhran players to the of- ficial flag raising. In tem- peratures never reached before the flag was raised by Billy Jean and Alyx Ni Chathail. In perfect timing as the proceedings finished the sound of ice cream vans could be heard and a huge cheer went up by both children and adults as the welcome ices

arrived. Special thanks to coordinator of the Club Obair Bhaile Rachel and Cairde

for sponsoring

cones for all! The day was not yet over as muinte- oir Briain and his friend Kevin provided a turn in the bouncing castle for all. Mile buíochas at

the

end of another school year to all who have con- tributed in any way to our children, our greatest asset.
